Morning all,

Putting this out there for a bit of advice/confirmation. I’m too much of a thinker, but I’m guilty of making a rash choice at the death just to get it done then I regret it afterwards. So, a bit of a ramble first so you know what’s spinning round in my head….

Our current fleet is a 2008 Suzuki Swift (owned 15 years and actually the car which gets most use), a 2013 Swift Sport ‘fun car’’ (I’m keeping this for now) and a 2021 BMW 128ti (used for our very occasional trips, usually 600+ mile long weekends to see family). I don’t use the BMW as a daily and in town etc if I can help it as I’m always a bit edgy leaving it parked up, don’t like the gearbox and ride quality plus it’s a bit thirsty for that use. It means I have a lot of value sitting there in something that’s not getting used, which is daft.

I’ve pretty much decided that we don’t need 3 cars. The old Swift is technically my wife’s car but she’s a very reluctant driver who has always struggled a bit with manual gears/hillstarts etc. She’s not interested in driving the BMW and honestly I wouldn’t be too keen on that anyway.

I’ve run the BMW through WBAC and am reasonably happy with what it says, the proof would be in taking it down there but I can’t see what they can reasonably chip me for. Assuming I let it go, then there’s the proceeds of that and maybe a little more to stick into a car which replaces the BMW and ultimately the old Swift too, once the new arrival is comfortably in place.

I’ve gone round and round in circles but I keep coming back to a few cars, namely Honda Jazz Crosstar, Toyota Yaris Cross, Kia Niro, Skoda Scala, or possibly Skoda Fabia. I want a car that’s easy to drive, totally dependable as I just can’t be bothered with niggles, economical as I’m not asking it to be a performance car, big enough for the trips away but small enough for day to day use and parking. Finally, the more likely it is to hold value the better, as the plan when I pull back from work in 3-5 years would be to swop it for a small EV, sell my Swift Sport in the meantime and get something like a Honda CR-V to see me into retirement/likely grandparent duties etc.

Am I missing any obvious options from this little list above? If you’ve got this far, many thanks!

CH-R or Corolla hybrids. 1.8 for maximum economy or 2.0 for a bit more poke. Both ultra reliable.
