Not really my area of expertise as when I last spent £15k it was on a Z4!

He drives a VW CC at the moment and it's well past it's best. He has an upper budget of £20k, would rather spend closer to £10k so I'm putting it out here at £15k. He doesn't tend to treat his cars well, he doesn't really have an interest in cars but has mentioned Audi so he must have some sort of badge snob in there itching to get out.

4 doors, boot big enough for golf clubs, reliability pretty important. He drives very slowly, engine doesn't really matter.

My go to would always be something like a 320i M Sport. He wants sat-nav and bluetooth and has got used to heated seats as to be fair to it, the CC came quite well specified as standard.

Ahhh

from the title, I thought you were selling your FIL, £15K seemed a bit over the top to be honest...

His only value would be putting him to work in your garden, but it'd cost you a fair whack in tea bags too.

I assume the above is referring to a V60 - I have a V40 and while comfy, quiet and full of toys, £15k would be way too much money to drop on one! And golf club space would be questionable.

However the V or S60 is a great shout

The Arteon is the successor to the CC so maybe worth a look?

I think he'd go for something German and I hadn't considered the 5 series, good shout.

Volvo also a good shout, I've passed them on. Think he wants a bit of a change from the VW.

Infiniti Q50 2.0T?
Lexus IS300h?
Mazda 3 or 6?
Toyota Corolla?

If you want actual not perceived reliability then I'd stay away from anything German or from the VAG stable, I'd also avoid anything with a downsized turbo petrol engine i.e 1.0T/1.2T.

I can vouch for the Lexus IS300h. Comfortable, quiet, easy to drive and still looks good IMO.

This has Lexus written all over it, surely. One of the few manufacturers that still has a decent catalogue of saloons. Not fast, but reliable, will take a fair amount of abuse, nice places to be, cheap to run and have that badge snob factor. Here's a few to have a butchers at

Not the same badge, but nicely appointed and very low mileage is this Mazda 6 2.0 Skyactiv G

Ok, this one does have a bit of go, but I really like this BMW 530i in SE spec with a load of options

As does this Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce in red, but just look at it!

Audi A4 35 TFSI uses a very understressed application of the EA888 engine, should be very reliable

Thanks all, sent him all manner of things and he’s liking the look of a petrol A6 so I’m taking him to look at a few next week.

I’d have gone 530i or something more interesting but like I said, aside from looks he doesn’t seem to have any interest. I wouldn’t even say it wins on looks either but they’re subjective.

Thanks again

Hyundai Genesis. Two with less than 30k miles on AT well within budget. Swallow the big tax and waft around forever in anonymous luxury...

He's put a deposit down on this, it'll do him nicely.
