Morning everyone,

My very first experience of remote buying...

New (to me) car delivered this morning, I'm working away so not at home.
The car doesn't have a v5, it was lost. I can vse a v62 for a new v5 no problem but how do I do about taxing it? Am I stuck with an expensive paperweight until the DVLA send me a new one in 6 weeks time?

The first I knew about the lack of v5 was this morning

you should be able to do it at a post office IIRC ie request new V5 and tax at the same time

As Simon said go to a post office counter and do the V62 and Tax at the same time, I did the same a couple of years ago with an R53 Mini I bought off a mate

Apparently not chaps. I need the previous owners postcode to tax it and I don't have that

How long should the V5 take to arrive after doing it at the post office? I had the same situation with Mrs TRDs car, had to go to post office to tax and V62 but after a month there's no sign of anything arriving.

Looking online, as a new keeper with new V5 it's 6 weeks.

This is what I don't want... 6 weeks with no car as it's not taxed!

So did you just post off the v62?

The post office did it all for me, I just filled out the form, they taxed the car, gave a receipt etc, and the car is taxed as I checked on the DVLA site, just no sign of the V5 yet.

Presumably the people you bought the car should have that post code ?

If not then they have a responsibility to obtain it if they have lost the V5.

Hopefully he will get it for me.

Tale as old as time... Someone seems helpful until something goes wrong.

Same situation very recently. Purchased a car on 27 October, new V5 arrived 25 November after submitting a V62. Fortunately the car remained taxed as the previous owner paid it annually and it was taxed until June 2026 otherwise we would have stuck with a 2 tonne paperweight.

Post Office were no help. They just gave me the phone number of the DVLA to call who told me there's nothing they can do until the V62 is received. The Post Office also told me I needed to pay cash for the postal order to pay the DVLA the £25. I've never seen, let alone needed a postal order before. It's 2025 FFS I grumbled as I walked to the nearest cash point.
