Powershift gearbox

I know these have a bad rep - am I right in thinking it’s mostly the dry clutch used in smaller cars and engines?

I’ve seen a 2016 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi I really like, and I need an automatic..

It’s at 50k miles now so I would service the gearbox upon purchase…

Any info on these greatly appreciated. I’ve done some googling but still unclear.

Fairly sure the Mondeo is the same box as the contemporary S-Max and Galaxy.

Like a lot of dual clutch gearboxes these can have issues they need servicing as per schedule they're a good box.

Wouldn't touch a powershift ever again. Absolute wallet opener.

The dropped it eventually after many 'fixes' and software upgrades.

Avoid anything with the word Powershift. Look for later, post 2019 models, they should just be listed as automatic or auto . These have the Ford 8 speed torque converter type gearbox called the 8F40 that is more reliable.

Edit: here s the cheapest I could find on AT. I d sooner have this car with 104k miles on it than a Powershift car with 50k miles on it.

Edit2: this then brings up another issue, as these cars with the more reliable torque converter gearbox have the less reliable wet timing belt Ecoblue diesel engines that are a nightmare.

To be honest, personally I’d not entertain looking at a Mondeo at all. Your money will probably be better spent on a Vauxhall Insignia (though they can have issues with oil pickup pipes getting clogged), or something post 2013 from VW group, or something post 2015 from BMW, if budget allows.

Maybe an avensis hybrid in estate form would be a good alternative

I don't think that Toyota make an Avensis hybrid...
(off topic, but this always seemed very strange to me - invest $ millions in hybrid technology and not put it in your regular taxi / family saloon / estate)

You want the 2.2, although it’s badged powershift it’s a asin torque converter box

I had 3 Ford Kuga's and half a dozen Connect's with the powershift box (I assume they only made 1) - I think one of the Connect's didn't have an issue. All of the others did, we abandoned Ford altogether eventually due to the wet belt issue but this also contributed.

They do - there are millions of Priuses and Corolla Hybrids being used as minicabs.
