Morning all,

New user checking in, and after advice after reading too much, and sitting in a few options.

I am changing jobs early 2026, and moving from a company Ford Ranger (3rd one in 7 years) to a car allowance, which is pretty decent. Plus mileage

I wasn’t thinking about leasing, but buying something from savings, and then Saving car allowance to replace this and be ready with cash when I want to change again in a few years.

Currently with the Ranger we have an Abarth 595C so polar opposites in space. One tall 13year old daughter and lots of outdoor toys, hence the SUV, and we like the size/height of the Ranger.

Needs to be able to tow, lighter weight unbraked boat trailer up to approx 600kg, and also larger boat trailer, braked 1200/1300kg depending on fuel onboard. Cope with mountain bikes, plus 3 times a year family surf trip with boards, body boards, plus all the usual accompaniments

We have a £30k budget, would prefer diesel as we do 20/25k per year longer journeys, was looking 2021 above ideally 50k or less miles

Have sat in/looked at the below

XC60 - liked it
Q5 - liked it
X3 -liked it
GLC - seeemd a bit small
Evoque - loved interior , boot too small
Tourag - didn’t seem as nice as above

Or do you have any other options I have missed,? Do I need an SUV, have also considered a 520d tourer or quite like the idea of the V60CC which will tow…

Thanks for any help sense checking my thoughts

Ian

I’d add a Porsche Macan to that list too.

If reliability and customer service are high on your agenda, I'd be looking at:

Honda CRV Hybrid,
Toyota RAV4 or Highlander
Lexus RX or RXL
Genesis GV70 or 80

A lot you can add to the list which will get you more bang for buck and space. Skoda Kodiaq/Seat Tarraco, Tiguan Allspace, Kia Sorrento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda CRV, Toyota Rav 4.

Hi OP,

If you liked the ruggedness of your pick-up, Mitsubishi do a Shogun Sport which is a SUV body on a pick-up chassis. It's fairly bombproof and is cheap to buy but it isn't very refined. I will be amazing at towing however...

The F Pace is a very good option at this price point:

GV 80, very nice cars hard to find though & a smidge over budget:

GV 70 again a very nice but only come in 2.2d form, not sure if that's an issue:

Maserati Levante:

GLE 350d:

Leftfield

3.3d mhev CX 60, you'll have a decent amount of (as well as low mileage) warranty left as well as them being a nice place to be:

The F Pace & Genesis (if you can find one) would get the nod but given your annual mileage the Mazda makes a lot of sense.

Those Genesis look great value.

Note this https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202510277... has been discounted by over £4k since listed in September.

Rather telling that no Land Rover products have been recommended.

Morning all,

I thought I would update, having looked at several options the current front runner is a XC60, followed by a Q5, now starting the search to find some to look at as options
