I’m looking for a new daily for work, currently have a 2015 Mercedes c250 diesel which is a great car but fancy a change.

I do around 95 mile commute a day so need something that will get 35+ mpg, a little bit of luxury inside, automatic, at least 250bhp and something fairly reliable.

The c250 I’ve had for about 10 months and I’ve put 20,000 mile on and has been a great car but it only has 200bhp and the auto gearbox is fairly sluggish.

I generally keep my cars 2 years only and then replace with another daily.

I don’t need a 4x4 as my wife has a Land Rover discovery and dosent need to be too sporty or a 2 seater as I have a Huracan Performante I use when the weather is nice.

I have been looking more towards the bmw 640d as seems comfortable and decent spec?

Any other suggestions?

ID3 would be perfect - I replaced my '2020 E350d with one and haven't looked back.

Well, apart from the little bit of luxury inside biggrin

Audi A6 3.0

BMW 535d

The 640d is probably a very good choice. I drove one and was excellent but a harsh ride on 20” alloys so make sure if you test drive one that you find some normal UK roads to try it on…

That’s what I’m thinking, I had an e92 335d many years ago and it was a very capable car.

A6 is another good option, didn’t think of that

If you look at an Audi, make sure the gearbox is acceptable to you. I've found that the Audi gearboxes can have a fair bit of lag, I generally don't like them, they can be poor.

I’m pretty sure they do an s tronic and tiptronic. S tronic is dual clutch and tiptronic is the slower torque converter box.

Or go EV as I suggested and ditch the annoyance of a multi-ratio gearbox altogether!

I don’t have a charging point at home so EV would be a no go

Don’t think there’s anything annoying about a gearbox. No lag with an Audi DSG box either, to the earlier poster.

On the original question- 530/535d. Likely to be more choice for the budget than a 640d, newer, etc.

Could you access a 3pin socket? For 95 miles a day you’d probably be ok with just plugging in every day so long as you started the week fully charged.

The Audi box is fine. Its a 7 speed tiptronic or in the 3.0 biturbo a ZF 8-speed Tiptronic.

It is a "learning" gearbox based on the driver styles, which can also be reset to factory standard, IIRC.

Also if you can push the budget a little then you are in Audi A8 3.0tdi SE territory which would be a marvellous way to commute.

We did 70k miles in a F13 640d, and I thought it was a lovely car. The engine and gearbox were well matched for me, and it offered a nice performance and economy mix. The ride is harsh on the 20's with runflats though as mentioned.

Probably very boring. But the best Lexus you can find within budget? Probably an IS. There are a few RC’s around budget on Autotrader they look a nice thing.

I think this is what I’m swaying towards, ideally want one with less than 80,000 miles so should come into budget

Why does no one ever suggest Lexus or Subaru on these threads?

Unless the RC is the 5 litre, then they are gutless.

Pistonheads, 5 litre matters!

I have been in a few Lexus 2.5 hybrid and they are perfectly adequate. Unless the op plans on doing his 95 mile commute on the Nurburgring I think he would be fine.

The only Subaru with sensible economy for a 95 mile commute is a Forester Hybrid, but I think you'd be much better off with a Lexus or Toyota Hybrid.
