Leasing - How do you change car?
Discussion
Hi, I have always bought cars for cash.
But I am now thinking of leasing. I think I understand pretty well how it all works.
Except:-
1 - Is there any issues taking lease cars abroad for up to 3 months?
2 - I assume when the lease is up at the end of 3-4 years they come and collect the car on a specific date. But on the lease comparison sites I have been looking at the ability to deliver on a specific date seems unlikely, even if you search for in stock only, they seem to say delivery within a few weeks??
So how do you manage changing so you are not without a car for a period?
I’m sure it’s probably very simple, but keen to know for sure!

From my own experience once you've ordered the car someone from their delivery team will contact you to arrange a delivery date. I've always been able to chose the day but it'll be an 'all day' booking. Delivery can be driven or trailered - you usually find out when the car arrives, they never seem to know in advance. As for how long the delivery will take, that depends on whether you're leasing a 'stock' car, or a factory order. So how do you manage changing so you are not without a car for a period?
A few times I've managed to arrange return collection and delivery on the same day, it's certainly possible. That said I'm between leases at the moment with a 2 week gap so I've hired a cheap car to keep me mobile.
This is my concern as well. I jumped on the recent Citroen e-C5 aircross deal, which will be our first leased car. Our current family car was paid for in cash, which I'll sell when the new leased car is delivered.
But when the Citroen lease runs out after 2 years, then there's the stress of ensuring you get the next lease lined up in time (assuming you're staying with the leasing model)...
I had the luxury of waiting for a good lease deal to come up this time, but then you're under pressure to get a replacement lined up next time - and there may not be any good deals around at the time.
Of course this is not a problem if you have another car to tide you over, but I don't think we'll all fit in the Lotus

Start looking for your next lease about 6 months in advance (or purchase if you're jumping back off the merry go round).
Ideal option is to get the new car a month or so before the old lease ends. Then you can contact the old lease provider and get them to pick up the old car early and you should get a reduced final payment.
Only once in 12 years of leasing have I been without the new car when the old one is due to go back, which was during covid times and the replacement car was delayed production by a year (Hyundai Tucson). I went and bought a £5k 2010 Audi A3 cabrio to tide me over the 6 months the Tucson was delayed and ended up loving it! Missus got the Hyundai when her lease ended and I kept the Audi.
Since sold that (for the same money I paid for it!) and moved on to a 10 year old Volvo so well off the leasing wagon for now!
Regarding taking cars abroad, I can't see there being a major issue other than the relatively low mileage allowances the best deals can be found on. But you always have the choice to pay the excess mileage fee at the end (usually around 14p per mile these day - I miss the 7p days!!)
