So swmbo and I are looking for a cheapish car to run around in. She will use it daily for work with house calls etc. It could potentially be used for longer runs. Smallish capacity to keep fuel costs and VED down. It would be good if we could connect an iphone to the multimedia someway/somehow. Two or three door and probably manual, as generally small autos are pretty awful. Budget is about £5k

What do we think folks

The best VW Golf that you can find wouldn't be a bad bet.

I hadnt thought about the Golf, I will have a look at VED rates and engine sizes. Thanks for the input.

What about stuff like Aygo's ?

Really depends on what you want and how you plan to use it. A golf is a nice place to be.

My mum (!) has had a C1 or Aygo for the past 15 years.

The Toyota and Toyota rebranded cars (C1, several others) cost buttons to run and are reliable.

The odd motorway trip is fine in them too.

SWMBO currently has a 2015 Kia rio 1.25. it's not the last word in driving dynamics (or any word for that matter) but she likes it for her 15 mile commute - I like it because it doesn't go wrong (which means I don't get asked to fix it!). 50 mpg and £30 tax

The i20 is similar to run and a bit nicer to drive by all accounts.

I had one fitted to my nephews car & it's been faultless for the last two years.

Kia, Hyundai or small Toyota. Job jobbed. Dad on his third Kia C'eed, never had a moments bother, his wife had an Auris hybrid that she has had forever and never needs any attention, we bought daughter a Kia Picanto several years ago, long gone now, but it was as reliable as a rock, and surprisingly good fun in a foot to the floor manic buzzsaw triple way...

Appreciate the reply, some good thoughts here. Our daughter abused a 2009 107. Took it everywhere and it never once broke down, and passed every MOT. the new cars are a bit less spartan though. Although it seems it’s best to completely avoid the 1.2 in the C1 and 108.

The Kia is a good shout too. The Suzuki Swift could be another ?

I like these and drove the first generation of SRi and thought it pretty decent. But looking at the running costs, they are a bit too high.

Appreciate the effort though,Thankyou.

Would love to be able to stretch to the Picanto GT Line. A later Aygo is a good shout.

Thanks all

So we have been out looking at cars today, and the car that stood out for just feeling decent was the Kia Picanto. I think we could scrape into a 2017/18 gen 3 car. Would love the GT Line but that would be closer to 6k.

But the gen 3 just seems a lot nicer inside than the gen 2.

Good choice, if its genuine supermini you are looking for try the VW Up and its siblings. Also, I am biased but F56 Mini is a cracking car if you buy well...

I had a High UP and an UP GTI so I know they are pretty good. But the gen 3 Picanto feels easily as good with more toys as standard.

What about a Zoe? Ticks a lot of your boxes assuming you could charge at home.

Yep stick to the 1.0 L and avoid 1.2 L engine in Aygo, C1 or 108. Any of these would make a great runabout.

I run a Clio 5 as a daily (100Hp TCe) and genuinely can't fault it. Plenty of room and decent kit but keeps things sensible with manual handbrake/ sensible safety gubbins which can be disabled.

Perhaps you can pick up an early Clio 5 or a very well specced Clio 4?

Thanks for the suggestion. A Clio 5 just squeaks into my budget, but only one or two available, and I seem to be having trouble getting swmbo onside for anything French. But the 108's are plentiful, mostly with the 1.2 Puretech engine. They are cheap with good tech. But most say avoid like the plague. Perhaps cars from 2014 to 2017 should have been repaired or have already suffered failure. Then again maybe not.
