Hello,

I'm an ex-pat Brit living in the USA (North Georgia). I've been here for 24 years which means I've been driving on the other side of the road for longer than I had a license in the UK.

I'm within a year or two of returning home for good and having missed more than two decades of Euro spec cars I'm now not sure what a good choice would be for a 'first car'.

To start with I'd like a sub £4k small car that's cheap to run, insure, tax but is fun to drive. It'll be used by both myself and my American partner who has never driven a manual (which it needs to be). She is apprehensive of the UK roads to say the least, but is keen to learn!

Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

I'd say you are firmly in Ford Fiesta / Vauxhall Corsa territory!

Small, light and easy to drive and place on the road.
Ubiquitous enough to be able to get a decent example for your budget, with plentiful support for parts and servicing.

Just avoid the Ecoboom engine on the Fester!
