I went to my first big US collector car auction this weekend. It was the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee near Orlando Florida. Thought I'd share some photos. Supposedly 4,500 cars went across the block and I can believe it. What an experience. You can get right up to all but the most exclusive cars. Just about all were under cover. I think the event ran for nearly two weeks. I went with 2 friends for 3 days and we still didn't see all the cars. The cars are mostly American. There was a large Ferrari collection sold off all at No Reserve. Just about all had mileages in the hundreds only and looked immaculate. The star sale was a white Ferrari GTO that sold at around $35 million. I saw two F40's go over the block, 1 at I think around $10 million and the other around $5 million, but I don't know why the large difference in price. The auctioneers are very enthusiastic in getting the bids up and they changed every few hours to probably rest their voices. Lots of no reserves, and I am going to swag at 50% reserve not reached with offline bids invited. Lots of 'boomers' in the room for sure. Enthusiasm was high and some of those that did sell appeared to be making very good money.
Overall, quite the spectacle and if you ever have the chance to visit a large Mecum or Barrett Jackson, then do so.

The Cobra was real.

The GT40 was a real road car and was bid to around $5 million but did not reach reserve.

A lovely real 289 Cobra with a red interior.

Be honest. The auctioneers "patter" which is just him rambling at high speed.

Could you actually follow what he was trying to say?

I wouldn't buy at that sort of auction out of principle (and lack of funds but you know what I mean)

The silver shadow looks nice and comfy.

Yep the patter mostly sounded like gibberish but you could make out the numerical increment bidding. Some of the increment jumps were very high.

We looked at some of the cars up close and some had very obvious paint flaws.

Saw on Insta that known Fez collector David Lee bought the GTO.

Didn't realise it / they are such big events, staggered by the volume of cars up for sale.

By all accounts, RHD conversion and replacement engine knocked the price back

It was originally a RHD car, however RHD now typically trades at a discount to LHD given the wealthier buyers appear Stateside (despite being produced in far fewer numbers).

For someone who sells watches, that David Lee is doing alright isn't he!

His collection is off the scale for Ferrari's, having the Top 5 in both Yellow and Red is quite the tale.
