Hi,

My son, 25 years old, just completer his postgrad -and will be starting a new job in the coming weeks. I eagerly await him finally getting off my payroll onto a proper one! He will have a 8-10 mile commute to work every day. His mum kindly (against my better judgement agreed) to let him use her mini in the short term, but he will need a car in due course.

In terms of previous car, we bought him a £1,200, 2002 Toyota Yaris for his 18th birthday, from which he got over 40,000 virtually flawless miles, cheap running costs and low insurance.

He now wants something more sporty, but relatively economical, lowish tax/insurance, reliable and attractive. He is comfortable with manual or automatic - and would be happy with a 2 seater or a 4-5 seater. He doesn't want a diesel. Not much to ask!

Budget is around £3k-£4k which I will no doubt be encouraged to 'lend' him.

Can you please suggest a suitable car for the young man?

Seat Ibiza FR / Swift Sport / MX-5 are what I’d be looking at

I mean, the obvious answer is, as always, mx5.

But, what kinda cars does he like? Like, any clue at all? Does he actually like cars? Could he tolerate an older car if it get him something cooler?

When i was 25, after my first couple of hatchbacks, it had to be an mx5. Then it was a honda civic. Then a 350z. Then a bmw z4, finally settled on a 3 series.

But even with a modest budget, there's a lot out there.

Thank you for your thoughts.

My son does like cars, but he is far from a petrolhead. He wants something cool and cheap.

He does like the MX-5 and the Audi TT. Also the Honda Civic. Older cars are also fine (his Yaris had a cassette player!), as long as it has street cred. I am a bit worried about potential corrosion and reliability issues with much older cars though.

At 25, I was driving around in a MK1 Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec. Very reliable and handled well in the corners. I'd suggest he's prime "hatchback" age, and would enjoy something like a Fiesta Zetec S or Honda Civic Type S. Quick enough in the corner to feel fun, cheaper insurance because the engines not too big, and well built.

1.6T Astra GTC fi the insurance allows, they're a smart looking car & get the passive version of the VXR suspension setup:

If insurance is an issue then the 1.4T version is a good option but it doesn't get the same suspension setup but you will get a nicer spec model, in Limited Edition form:

All have DAB/Bluetooth, add one of these units & your son will have all the connectivity he'll need:

Add a decent double din unit & again he'll have all the connectivity, I put the older version of this unit in my sons car:

Honda civic. You can get nice looking ones without going for the R and they are normally extraordinarily reliable. Just watch for rust and you should be golden.

I’ve owned both MX5/TT and both negatively affected my ‘street cred’. Not that I had much in the first place. You get used to taking it on the chin after a while. Sometimes I could’ve been mistaken for Bonnie Blue the amount of dribble I was taking on mine hehe
