Hey,

I currently drive a 2016 ford fiesta 1.5l diesel titaniun x, its a good wee car, been driving it for nearly 4 years from 50k miles to now at 139k miles. My commute is 50 miles to the office and 50 miles back, about an hour each way (unless I hit traffic that tends to add an extra 20 minutes each way). I am thinming of trading the car in, I owe a bit of money on it and it's valued less than what I owe, I don't mind paying the difference.

I am looking for something that would be comfier to drive as the now when I get home I'm exhausted from the drive, sore neck (was worse before but now do exercises to help with it).

I'd be hoping for something that's still a 5 door, slightly bigger, automatic, cruise control, still diesel ideally. I would go electric but nowhere to charge at home and not a gaurantee of getting a charger at work, slightly bigger boot space than I have now would be a bonus.

I currently pay £191 a month in finance, about £70 a week in fuel. I'm thinking of upping my budget to between £250 and £300 a month for the finance, had a couple pay rises the last few years. I put £14k in the title as I believe my budget would cover 9.5% interest roughly (it's the figure I have seen on some cars I've looked at) would cover cars around £14k.

I am only looking the now, not in a massive rush, if need be I can wait until July when I get the MOT done then go for a trade in.

Some cars I've looked at are 2020 reg ford focus's that I've seen on auto trader, vauxhall astra's on there and arnold clark, renault arcana same places. Open to suggestions as I'm not sure what cars are more reliable/good for maintaining.

Happy to answer any questions.

Thanks in advance!

If you go slightly older than 2020 you could get something like a 2018 E220d SE which would be comfortable, or a 2016/17 6-cyl E350d though fuel economy will not be quite as good.

Are you sure biggrin

How about a Golf GTD (2019) ? Comfy, great fuel economy, stylish and sporty drive.
Or a Volvo S60 (2018 Diesel), super comfortable, quiet and made to do long drives.

Have a look at a bank loan rather than the 9.5% figure you were mentioning as presumably you have good credit history should be around the 6% figure.

Don't forget to factor in the negative equity on your Fiesta as well or have you already included that within the £14k?

Is that a 500 mile per week commute or only the days you are in the office?
About 10 years ago I used to do a 400 mile round trip commute once per week, driving up very early Monday and coming home Tuesday evening, it took its toll on me, but great to have one night a week away from home... I did it in a V Golf and if I needed to do it again I'd be looking at another diesel Golf or Seat Leon / Skoda Octavia VRS diesel.

What's 'comfortable' varies from person to person.
And a car that starts out comfortable can become less so after the seat has been used for 100k miles.

Some people get good mpg out of hybrids on 50mph commutes?

For me, when I was clocking up a lot of miles, the 'best car' was one which was OK for me comfort-wise and wasn't losing too much money in depreciation per mile, or guzzling fuel.

Also good if it's cheap enough to simply buy another one if it self destructs.
Doing a lot of miles in a £14k car with no real warranty is not risk free, so you have to decide what level of risk you can accept and how long you need the car to last before it's considered to have paid for itself, or maybe have a 2 or 3 year plan expecting it to have some amount of residual value.

I'd guess buying a £14k car, the biggest cost in the first year will be depreciation?

I've racked up long commutes in a few cars, most of them now too old to consider, the one that's perhaps still relevant is a Mondeo? If you can get one with seats you like, reasonable power but not a 'sporty' model it might be a good option for a lot less dosh. Dunno about 'automatic' though...
An SE model beemer is also worth considering?
If you really need a car 100% available for a commute, you need to think about who's going to fix it if there's a problem.

Auto box would be my first thought then…. 320/520D beemer, E220/250 Merc, any 2.0D VAG; golf, Passat, Tiguan, Kodiaq, Octavia etc…

Recent service history is key including cam belts and water pumps….

Op, not a car advice and I personally wouldnt do 50 mile commute in it.

However, purely from financial perspective

£14k pcp with interest rate would come to about £20k

You can get 0%pcp atm on swift for this amount. Brand new one. Just saying.

But again - small noisy car so not sure it fits the bill

4 owners in 5 years suggests otherwise.

Plenty of cars out there for £14k that haven't been crashed

My immediate thought was something like a 330d or 530d. The SE model if you prefer a softer ride.

You'd be better off getting a loan for 14k, interest would be roughly between 4-6%.

2.0d Insignia Elite Nav great car for eating up the miles:

The Focus is a good option but it has the wet belt which is around £700-800 every 60-70k.

I didnt think of that, checked clearscore for now and £14k for 5.8% apr (obvs that could change when I go to apply) so £268.40 a month for 5 years.

Ill be partially covering the negative by about half so would be about an extra £750 on top of what I pay for the car.

500 miles a week, I dont get to work from home often, if I have an appointment is the only times or if it snows (which it always misses my area which sucks haha)

When i was looking at some focus's when I done some digging it said they had a dry belt, how did you find out what belt a model had?
