I've had some lovely cars over the past twenty-five years and still have several luxury vehicles. But, now that the children are adults, I don't need the same cars.

Also, the roads. I destroyed a tyre on a car a few months ago, could not replace it, so had to buy four. I hit another pothole today and it was like a wake up call.

So, I am selling off my cars. The first of which is a Range Rover Vogue SE. It's costing me circa £1k a month and I use it once every six weeks. Others will follow.

The current plan is to keep my summer car - 2-door convertible - for now. I have a motorbike and am soon to buy a second. But I need something for carting stuff about and work appointments An estate perhaps.

I feel sad about it, because it feels like I am going backwards, but I would rather spend a five figure sum on travel than overheads for cars I don't use and which stand to be messed up by the state of the roads.

I have even considered hiring a car for a couple of days, as and when I need one. Or maybe buying or leasing something cheap. But what?

Buy something like this:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202601289...

The depreciation will be minimal it'll do everything you need it to & you won't mind if you don't use it for a couple of weeks.

Sometimes keeping the car you already have is the cheapest option.

I'd have thought a Range Rover ought to be ideal for coping with potholes, and the monthly cost wouldn't seem so wasteful if you just used it more!

Perhaps I should sell one of the others first. But it is the one I like the least.

It was that one that I did the tyre on. They said "Yes Sir, you will require this specific tyre. Hand-crafted by unicorns in Zanzibar. For a set you will be required to pay £3000 and you may have them in three months". True story.

Any well looked after Diesel Audi, BMW or Mercedes estate is always going to be a great option. As an alternative the Jaguar XF estate seems to be very popular choice.

You mention the state of the roads a few times, how do you square that with having one (soon to be two) motorbikes and a low riding 2 door sporty summer car? Wouldn’t you feel a lot safer just using the Range Rover more if you’re that bothered by the road conditions?

You are of course quite correct. But the summer car I really like and the motorcycles are trail / adventure bikes.

In this part of the world it is either lowered junk or SUV that race between the speed bumps then stop dead to crawl over them. Potholes too.

Seems pointless buying SUV, lol, perhaps it it the expensive tyres that scare the overstretched " keep up with fashion" brigade.
