Hi Guys, first time poster and looking for some on the best cars to look at based on the following information. Wouldn't consider myself overly knowledgable about cars so any help appreicated!

Location:

Glasgow

Price range:

£5-£8k

Lease or Buy:

either

New or used:

used most likely

Auto or Manual:

whichever is cheaper

Intended use:
Got a new job which I will need to travel for work and want a secondhand car as a runaround so I don't drive my main one (Mazda CX5) in to the ground.

How many miles do you plan to do a year:

apparently only around 4k miles a year although I would budget for double that just in case

How often to you make long journeys:

Mostly should be fairly short trops (sub 20 miles). In theory the longest it should have to do in one trip would be 40-50 miles but that should be quite rare

Does it need to be ULEZ compliant?

For Glasgow ULEZ potentially but not a deal breaker

Vehicles you've already considered:

Only just started looking but wanting something with good mpg

Size of car:

sub compact/compact/mid size I'd say. Need enough space to carry some kit around with me

Is this your 1st vehicle:

no

Do you need a Warranty:

preferably

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle:

no

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle:

no

Additional Notes:

as above this is a second car that I want for use as a work only car (very occasionally might be needed outside of that for leisure). I will be claiming mileage back from my eomployer. Need it to be on the cheap side and preferably cheap to repair and cheap on tyres. I don't need it to be huge but could be carrying around laptops and pcs now and again so need something with a bit space i.e. an Aygo would be too small for example.

Thanks!

Sounds perfect use for a Seat Ibiza, VW Polo, Skoda Fabia with a 1.2 TSi engine. Should plenty of manual gearboxes for those and some DSG autoboxes.

4-8k isn't going to run your car into the ground. I would just get business use added to your insurance and use your own car. It will be a lot cheaper. There is also the fact that leaving your own car sitting around for days/ weeks on end won't do it any good. Do you really need two cars?

@pica thanks for the advice, will have a look at those models, anything I should be steering clear of/looking out for? I see a few that are under the £5k mark within 20 miles of me and that would actually be perfect. Although some have high mileage (over 80k)

@supersonic
yeah I know what you mean, I only found out today that the mileage could be on the lower end however we need the two cars due to family circumstances. I can't be taking the "main" car every day for work and leaving my partner with no car all week.

We have had a Skoda Fabia from new for 13 years and 83k miles. Faultless. Nothing really to look out for, on ours the bodywork is rust free. One useful bit is that it can take a full size spare. A Seat biza has a more 'sporty' image, if that matters. Or you could go up a size (and price) to a Seat Leon The Fabia/Ibiza have good turning circles and are short enough to make parking easy they may not have Sat Nav, but Waze on a smartphone would cover that need.

Do you have driveway parking? If so surely a Nissan Leaf's going to be about the cheapest to run. 40kW should be good for 100+ miles on a charge even in winter.

If you have a driveway: A used 100k miles MG5 Long Range. It'll probably be an ex-taxi but not sure why that matters. Cheap as chips, don't tend to go wrong, fairly comfortable, the least "sporty" car ever made, reasonable accommodation, no servicing, under 2p a mile fuel cost charged over night.

I do have a driveway but no electric charger, I thought the pricing on Evs was going up cost wise and tax wise? Also when I looked at them in the past I was going to have pay around £800 for a charger to be installed, I think?

They're going to start charging 3p/mile tax for EV's, but depending on your tariff you could be paying as little as 2-3 pence per mile for the electricity, so still about half the 12-15p/mile in petrol for a reasonably economical petrol car. A "Granny charger" running on a standard 3 pin socket will charge at around 2.5kW, so adding 7-8 miles range per hour charged, so if you're only using the car during work hours you have the potential to add around 100 miles charge every night.
Worth looking at what your current tariff is and if a low rate EV tariff would work for you (cheaper night rate for higher day rate), it has the potential be a cheap option but you need to do the maths to check it works for you.

There's a thread over on the EV section asking a similar question that might be worth a look

Might be worth getting a second car for your partner, wether you pay their motoring costs or you do is up to yourselves.
One thing to consider. If you get a second car for yourself for work, would this become your main car? If you leave your Mazda at home for your partner to use, would they become the main driver? This has insurance implications.

what would be the difference of getting them the car as opposed to me? I only get around 30-35MPG on my mazda so was hoping to get something more economical, and I know the annual increase of mileage shouldn't make much of a difference but since she is on mat leave I would want her to have the "safer/higher ride height" of the two cars.

I get that my new one I will need to delcare I am using it for work purposes when taking out insurance. I still believe I would be the "main" driver of both vehicles although it could be a case that I need to switch my main car to my partners name to be the main one but I believe overall I would be the one doing the same if not more milage on my Mazda to be honest.

Another vote for an EV. Probably no need for a charge point at that mileage.

Will get facelift Renault Zoe or Nissan leaf, and BMW i3 in thst price range.
Or a near new dacia spring for around £9k.

She could be earning her own NCB. With both cars in your name, only one would accrue NCB. Im not trying to be difficult, I'm just pointing things out. Anyway, you know your circumstances better than anyone, so It's your decision.
Good luck with the baby btw smile

Maybe an Auris / Corolla hybrid?
(Note that Toyota mixed up the Corolla and Auris names - they are the same thing so if you are searching tick both boxes)

That will only be Euro5 so not ULEV compliant. I thought you had only short journeys, not sure this would help.

My advice is that the car has to be ULEZ compliant. I live many miles away from a ULEZ zone and assumed that I wouldn't go in much, however some months I get hit with £150 charges without eveny realising (ie you will go in more than you think!)

Appreicate these, some a bit higher on my budget. I can afford to go to the £8k mark but would prefer to try keep on the lower end if possible as would allow me to buy all in cash.

What do we think of this one (I know has high mileage)
