My BiL wants one of these. He's not into cars but has his head stuck on this one as they had the Mk1 for a long time.

There seems to be a bit of a mix of engines and beyond not wanting white and ideally having a sunroof he has no requirements. I've seen plenty of nice looking ones well below his budget.

He will do shorter journeys mostly, with the odd longer one thrown in here or there.

So, what do I need to look out for and which engine will be the most suitable for him?

Such a shame, I really like Volvo and we've had a few. Just seems that manufacturers are merging into the same cheap plastics built machines designed with longevity for the first (financed) owner only.

Get him to test drive a Lexus RX as well.

Have a couple of B5’s at work, very comfy cars to drive and seem very popular amongst the users. Ours have been with us about 12-18 months and no reliability issues, I’d guess both are on about 35k miles.

The only fault I’ve found is with the DAB which occasionally will stop working and requires a hard reset on the screen to bring it back on, doesn’t affect Bluetooth or car play streaming though.

My mate has a 21 reg XC90, not sure of the exact model but it is very well spec'd and an ex Volvo management car, its a Hybrid and he's just got it back after being off the road for 4 months waiting for a hybrid battery replacement, due to long lead time issues.

He was fortunately given a very nice new XC90 demonstrator for the same period.

I suspect the article is about the plug in hybrid which is a strange car with petrol FWD and electric RWD. I've had a T5 (what the petrol B5 used to called) for over five years and all that has gone wrong is a failed electric boot latch. Brilliant car.

Given when it was discontinued you won't find the diesel for as much as £40k now I suspect so just get a B5 and avoid the plug in. Big boot, lots of seats and brilliant ride if you go for air suspension.

We had one for 5 years without issue. Fabulous family car. It won't do anything for the budding enthusiast but thats not its job. Its an SUV and therefore why the need for anything sporting.

Thanks guys, the T5 looks the best for what he needs although petrols are very few and far between, hybrid petrols seem the most common nu are these the ones with a petrol FWD and electric RWD?

Wouldn't run a Volvo hybrid outside of manufacturer warranty (although at £40k you should be fine)

That looks so out of date. Awful.

Not an XC90 but got a 2022 XC60 B5 MHEV

Pros:
Very solid build
Very comfy ride, especially long journeys
Quick in a straight line

Cons:
Handles like a wardrobe (especially understeer) but not unexpected.
Lucky if get 30mpg - again not unexpected for a big car with a 250bhp petrol engine
Central info screen often crashes
Dealers hopeless and expensive (£750 quoted for last service)

I’ve got a 2018 XC90 R-Design Pro D5. Had it for 7 years.
It’s a nice car from a comfort and design perspective but it’s been a disappointment in relation to its reliability.

I abandoned the dealership and went to a Volvo Specialist which has been good, but it still sinks us for an unexpected bill of about £1k every year on top of normal servicing.

Failures have been:-
PowerPulse pipe failed - suspect the current one is on its way
Loom to rear suspension failed causing e brake to say on
Loom failed again at a different spot causing abs sensor failure
Rear door lock failed - couldn’t open from inside or outside. Weatherproofing issue on early cars, but mine is supposedly improved
EGR pipe fractured
It eats a set of pads and discs at 30k intervals - Brembo discs and pads are better.
Slave module for rear door failed - door stuck locked
22” wheels should be avoided - buckle and crack easily and £1100 a pop.
Some minor infotainment glitches but we have kept the updates going via the specialist.
Other small stuff too which I can’t quite recall.

Early on we had the Polestar remap done and high most definitely made the gearbox sharper, but given the car’s value we felt we were paying to complete Volvos development work.

I really want to like it as a car as it ticks many boxes. It’s in Bursting Blue too which I like, but the over experience has been a bit poor.

Great as a new car with a warranty but out of warranty, less so. I suspect and extended warranty would exclude the PowerPulse hose.

A good friend has had several XC60s and found them to be quite bullet proof. By the sounds of it some 90’s can be a bit spendy..

They can't be that good if they've only sold 300 or so since launching. £36k for something with the interior from 2010

We had a 2015 one, so first of the newer shape. Lovely looking car to look at and travel in, but had quite a few issues. Sold, and we’re now in an early Xc60 D5 which was 25% of the price and has been great.

Badge snobbery has a big part to do with this, trying to get people in the UK to part with 80K for a new brand is always going to be a hard sell.

Go & drive one, then you can come back & tell us what you didn't like,
