Looking for some real-world advice from those who’ve owned or driven both.

I’m currently deciding between a BMW X5 30d and a Range Rover Sport D300 as the next family car. Priorities are comfort, reliability, and something that still feels a bit special to drive day-to-day.

From what I can see:

The Range Rover Sport seems to win on comfort, ride quality, and overall “luxury feel”

The X5 looks like the better all-rounder – more reliable, more practical, and probably better to drive

This will mainly be used for family life (kids, longer drives, daily use), so I don’t want something that’s going to be a headache to own, but equally don’t want it to feel boring.

I’ve heard mixed things about Range Rover reliability – is it still an issue on the newer models, or overblown?

If you had to choose one as a daily family SUV:

Which would you go for?

Any ownership experiences (good or bad)?

Anything I should specifically look out for spec-wise?

Budget is roughly in line with a well-spe

None of these will be exciting in anyway but they're both good family busses.

When you're down to two/three options going for actual test drives will make your decision for you.

Macan is IMO the best driving SUV by a country mile.

What about between a RRS or X5?

I agree re driving, but the interior is very tight (and I mean very; talking from experience).
If into Porsche, then to consider a Cayenne.

Have driven both and been a passenger in both, driven the X5 for around 5,000 miles and RR Sport for about 500.

Both great cars, both great family cars. Go test drive them.

Personally, assuming you are talking about new shape RR then I don't think it's worth the extra money over the X5. BIL just picked up a 2025 X5 30d XLine from BMW for a smidge over £50k. Dirt cheap compared to similar age RR Sport.

Is the comfort level night and day between the RRS and X5? I’m looking at 2021 plates onwards.

What one did you prefer after driving both ?

Comfort levels and preference are subjective.
Best thing to do is to test drive both cars and that should help you to decide.

Out of those options I'd go with the X5. I had an F15 40D for a number of years and thought it was great. It was a pretty good steer and the split tailgate was useful too. An extended warranty is a must whatever you go for.

I'm back in a family sized SUV but opted for the XC90 this time for other reasons.

Another +1 for Cayenne - primarily because it actually was "fun" if you wanted it to be.

Mine was an ancient "S" worth about 50p - but put it in manual mode, sport suspension (mine had air) etc. - and down a twisty road it was far more fun that a car like that should be.

If I wanted another "big" car - it would be top of my list.

My personal opinion that X5 has poor ride quality on UK roads. RRS requires a leap of faith regarding reliability if reports are to be believed. If I was determined to buy a JLR for road use I'd see what Velars are available.

Out of those 2 I preferred the RRS as it was more comfortable, looked and felt better and didn't seem as crashy as the suspension on the X5. I don't own either of them but had the opportunity to clock up just over 1k miles in both. The FFRR would be the winner but no idea on how reliability between the 2 compare.

Only 3 so far (though one was X5 30d vs 40d).

OP you just need to test drive both cars and decide which suits your needs best. Good luck.
