Hi all,

I’ve currently got an OG LCI M2, F56 Mini Cooper S and a Clio 172 Cup.

The plan is to expand the family this year to add to our car mad six year old boy.

The Clio is definitely staying, it covers car shows, track days and nostalgia all in one beautiful package.

The M2 is a bit of an ornament covering only 6k miles in two years as I daily the Mini so it makes sense to liquidate both and get one more family orientated family car. Three, three-door cars don’t make much sense going forward.

My mind is taking me to the X3 M40i but are there any other options worth considering?

The rationale behind the X3 is it has the B58, a decent sized boot, the height makes getting a little one in and out easier I can use it to tow the Clio to track days further afield.

I’m not absolutely against saloons or estates, I got a W204 C63 saloon when my son was 6 months old and it was no bother for 3.5 years of glorious V8 motoring.

Thanks all

I’ve got a Porsche Macan Turbo with the performance package and absolutely love it.

A lovely place to sit with air suspension so it floats over our crappy roads, but stick it in sport mode and it turns into an absolute nutter of a rocket ship.

Model Y performance? Perfect for families, cavernous boot, amazing app and sound system, Far quicker than the Macan turbo, it's mental. Plus you can use all that performance without worrying of £2 a litre petrol prices that are coming. Eg, today you'd be paid about £5 to fill your car up on octopus agile.

Suspension is harsh (though better than the AWD LR model) but means it doesn't wallow in corners, and the 23/24 MY was found to be the most reliable EV you could buy. These are built in China/Germany so as well screwed together as anything from polestar

My service costs over 3 years were £5.

25% quicker to 60 is a hell of a lot quicker. Not saying the Macan is slow, I had a MY AWD which hit 60 in same, but the performance is another level, made my awd feel slow getting back in to it.

No idea where you’re getting 35% from, but the difference between the 2 cars to 60 is 0.1 seconds,

Not wishing to enter into an ICE v EV debate, I don’t want a Tesla but get the points made.

My misses has an EQC so we have the EV covered.

Macan is a strong consideration but like the EQC has the sloping profile which robs boot capacity.

How about an F Pace SVR? Nothing much beats a throbbing great V8 with a supercharger. Plus they've got fantastic room inside and great equipment levels.

There's a chap near me with one. Sounds absolutely epic.

Definitely look at the E53 Estate as an SUV alternative. Estates bodies tend to have more practical boot dimensions too.

Thanks all. A lot to think about!

Are the F-Pace subject to the usual JLR fragility? They are a great option on paper I just worry about reliability.

Depends what you mean. Jaguar's aren't especially unreliable, they're on par with the competition. Its only one specific engine, the 2.0 diesel Ingenium engine that is a straight up 'avoid'.

Service it properly, drive it like you've actually passed your test, and it'll give you many years of happy miles.

With the ones I linked to there's a potential issue with the coolant pipes under the supercharger, it's not a big issue but one I'd class as a preventative one.

Overall they're pretty robust & no worse than anything else listed.

A colleague of mine has one and has had no issues. I have read reviews on them and think they are meant to be pretty reliable. As another said, the noise is epic!

There is actually only two answers.

M440d Touring

M440i Touring

Whilst there not cheap used, they’ll continue to hold their value and will make great interesting family transport.
