My sister is looking for a car to replace an old Ford Focus that’s now on 125K and unsure she can depend on it.

She is looking for something suitable for a family so decent rear legroom and boot.

This morning she sent over the pictured Hyundai Tucson on 40K miles. I can’t find any horror stories about that particular engine and car. Except a What Car guide that suggested the diesels were the pick of the range. It is also the base spec.

I think she could do a lot worse re. wet belts and other modern car woes.

Is there anything worth mentioning about this particular car or suitable alternatives.

Drives are varied with a mix of urban and longer journeys.

TIA 😃

My money would be something like a Mazda CX5 which is available in either petrol or diesel.

Ignore what car they are looking at brand new cars not for longevity. Something petrol from Japan if you want reliable (boring ish) car.

Why suddenly as her trust in the Focus been lost, if it is a 1.6 it is probably the most reliable car you are going to find.

125k on a looked after 1.6 Focus is no problem, had them with double.

If the belt needs doing, do it, keep calm and carry on.

She will hate parking an SUV

Thank you for the suggestion. I swear Mazda diesels are their worst efforts at a good engine though…

i3 will be in budget as well - rear doors are a bit of a pain but it’s a roomy car. Buttons to run

The 1.6 is very gutless so try to find a Sportage/Tucson with the 1.6T drivetrain:

Or the Ford Kuga with the 1.6T drivetrain.

Ha ha, just stating the alternative since your brief warming towards diesel (albeit in the Tuscon).
Not that I would buy a SUV myself, but the 2.0l skyactive lump in the CX5 does have a solid reputation.

Could I recommend a Honda Jazz Sport 1.5. We’re on our 3rd Jazz and for this one we came down in size from a Sharan.

Very reliable, 60MPG on a run, loads of of room and I also think it looks ok. Plus we’re about to chip ours.

We did test drive a CX5 but thought for the money the Jazz was abetter city car, had more room in the back and is cheaper to run.

My thoughts as well.

Run the Fiesta until it really dies.

What’s wrong with the 1.5t? I was looking at a mk10 civic with that engine. Drives well and seems to have good enough reports? Compared to the 1.0 anyway!

Oil consumption, head gasket issues and terrible carbon build up, if it's reliability over anything...stick to the well trodden 1.5 NA Honda engine.
