So I currently run a lease deal every 2 years then hand it back and get another lease deal, however this year (Dec) when my lease deal finishes I'm really thinking about leaving leasing behind and actually buying a car for myself to own.

I tend to drive around 10k per year and most of my miles is local except I do work away and will likely need to take the car to Scotland a few times per year for work.

So my thinking was how about going for something nice and sporty, i.e a car I've always fancied and something thats around £20-£25k, then at least I own a car outright.

I've got a few options:

1, 2012 BMW M5 F10 (totally impractical car but what a car), something nice and fast with a lot of luxury in it and I could find a real nice example and look after it, only thing is the expense needed tor run a car like this. £720 car tax per year, 25 mpg won't be cheap to run and likely factor in around £1k a year to maintain it?

2, 2023 Mini Countryman JCW car, something like this, nice turn of pace and plenty enough car for me to be a good daily runner.

3, Maybe something like a 2016 Porsche Macan 3.0 S Diesel, seen some nice examples of these cars for around £25k as well. Again, fast practical and a bit of luxury.

4, Take a new Tesla lease deal right now (will have to pay the early termination costs) of my current lease deal but this would be cheap to run as I can charge it from home. Only thing is, it's another lease deal but its certainly caught my eye, took one for a test drive last week and very impressed, or I could wait until the end of the year then get a 2nd hand Model 3 from Tesla, maybe a 3 year old one (would be a Model 3 LR AWD version) with some warranty and lowish miles, buy it outright and just run it.

As much as I'd love the BWW M5, it just screams the non-sensible option and likely expensive to run, the Mini Countryman JCW could be a greta option but then do I go Tesla at the end of the year with a 2nd hand version or bite the ullet and get a new lease deal now...

Where’s the classic in your options?

The F10 M5 whilst tempting at the price point can throw some massive bills including the engine grenading itself which can total write off the car for the repair cost. I was looking at them myself and ended up buying an F82 M4 instead.

The Mini Countryman is a pretty nice car, my wife has one, it’s a Cooper S but not a JCW and it goes well and she has owned it around 6 years and it’s needed nothing other than routine servicing and maintenance, brakes etc.

Can’t comment on the Macan or Tesla.

£1k for a V10 M5 a year to maintain - few more grand needed I'd say.

Oh they are fantastic cars, sound amazing and go like muck off a shovel. Anything needed its mega mega money hence so cheap sadly. I remember going around the Nurburgring ring taxi which was one and it was a wonderful lap.

Do you have any particular criteria for a car yoh might purchase outright? I know you’ve mentioned sporty, but not much else!

Grand tourer + V8: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202603130...

Same era as the F10 M5, but better noise and (allegedly) from one of MB’s more reliable periods: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202601119...

Mustang? Audi RS of some sort? Jaguar XFR?

Lots of (excellent) potential options, though I’m aware I’ve only listed V8s, because life’s too short…

100% get a V8 before they are banned. XFR seems a good shout. Jokes aside, if your spending a chunk of cash, get something that makes you smile every time you walk up to it.

What about a BMW 540i?

Would be the newer generation than the F10 M5, plenty quick standard and can reliably make 450-500bhp.

MPG 35-40 on your long runs to Scotland, very comfy, handle well and pretty reliable. Should have more toys than the F10 too and the G series interiors are very very nice.

Engine is a peach, and 4WD too. Might be able to find something in an unusual colour combo if you're willing to hunt.

I wouldn't want to own a Tesla outright. I have a Model 3 Performance at the moment an the value is dropping like a stone, I PCP'd it when it was already 3 years old and my negative equity is growing by the week. Going to be stuck with it for the term and hand it back.

Late M6? they are £200 ish to tax so an extra £560 for running costs every year!

£27,350 one in Maidstone looks ok, a couple of Grand coupes out there too.

I think these lower tax ones will hold value better, in 10 years, assuming a 5% tax increase per annum, your tax would be £350 the year older £1300.

Even a well maintained, fault free F10 can be an absolute wallet hoover.

Had one - for around 6 months. Think 18mpg taking it easy and full fat road tax

All consumables - tyres, brakes, bushes etc - M5 specific itmes with beefy price tags.

Add in the fact that whilst powerful - it's incredibly smooth, serene and fuss free performance and a tad dull

I'm going for the current Tesla rwd lease deal after many years of buying my own cars, so I'd obviously recommend that. Do message me if you change your mind about the deal if you want 650 free supercharger miles.

However, if there is something you really feel like trying, then why not?

A supercharged Jag would be fun and fairly dependable, or a C63 would be a lot of fun. A Lexus was recommended earlier and that does sound like a great balance between sensible and stupidly fast.
