Cheap and Reliable
Discussion
Hello all, first time poster!
Looking for some advice on a potential change. Currently in a 2019 Mondeo Estate 2.0 diesel which has been great for space (2 young kids), but I bought it on finance at 95k miles and it’s clearly had a hard life as a business car, so I’m looking to move on.
Budget is around £4,000 for something older but known for reliability. Ideally petrol to avoid potential diesel issues, manual or auto considered.
Needs:
- Enough rear space for 2 child seats
- Saloon, estate, MPV or SUV
- Good reliability is the main priority
- Reasonable running costs
Nice to have (but not essential):
- Something that’s reasonably enjoyable to drive
- Potential to improve/tidy up over time
Happy to carry out maintenance myself and keep on top of it.
Open to any suggestions or things I may not have considered, appreciate any advice!

4k would buy you a stonking Volvo 855 or 945/965 although the 965 might be a bit juicy. An 850 wagon with the 2.5 20v engine is a cracking, characterful car and a 940 wagon is cavernous, 2.3lpt engine surprisingly frugal and both cars will be future proof, that is, all the car your family will ever need, what you spend on fuel you will save on silly maintainance and they are done depreciating
