I am looking to move out of my super dependable Kia Optima Estate after 6 trouble free years and am after an E Class Coupe.

I have found two examples. Both are 2016 350d versions, both have the same Premium pack and have been well maintained. The owners appear to be like me ~ middle aged, not dragging their knuckles and with a “fix all the niggles and do the necessary preventative maintenance” approach.

Car 1 105,000 miles £8,000
Car 2 75,000 miles £11,000

I’m always happy to save a few quid but wonder if at this age I’d be better opting for the slightly lower mileage option. Thoughts.

If you get one get the subframe inspected. Mercedes are winding down their support for replacing FOC.

They handle miles very well, but it depends on the history. I’d be happy to run the cheaper higher miles one but only if you’re not going to have to eat into your saving needing bring it up to scratch.

But yes, ditto rear subframe. Ideally get it on a ramp but you can get at it on the ground if you know where to look.

Aware of sub frame issues having owned a 2008 SLK 🤪 so happy to get under and have a good poke around. The 105k miler could very quickly eat up the price difference on a basic suspension refresh which it’ll probably need at some point. Decisions decisions…

How many miles are you going to be doing?

At the lower end this one is decent:

are you sure you need diesel? NOX sensors often an issue with mercs, fuel prices and then the usual dpf/egr.

e400 an option, would need to spend a bit more but may work out less expensive with repairs etc

the answer is ‘I don’t know’ as I’m between employment 🤪 but I do a 400 mile round trip every 10 days and I’ll be spaffing down to the Austrian Alps in the summer for 3 weeks. I had the 350 engine in the SLK and it’s a peach of a V6 so can only imagine the 400 is a cracker with the addition of turbos but they’re quite a rare beast.

If they both look tidy at face value with good documented history you could always get a PPI done and pick the best.

Might be worth having a word with www.qualitycarstoday.co.uk as they seem to get A LOT of very nice E350 CDIs in stock.

I have had a lot of 320/350d's (personally owned as well as driven) over the years & I've yet to have had an issue with a NOX sensor.

OP they're a good car & will suit your usage, on the long run expect low to mid 40's if your getting a bit of a move on & mid to high (you might even crack 50's) the 9 speed makes a worthy difference.
