Have you driven one?
I had one as a hire car for a week recently
The constant bing bonging, the car telling me I was tired after driving for 10 mins, telling me to look at the road when I was looking at the infotainment screen trying to change the heated seats which is buried 3 menus deep + other related tech issues meant the byd dropped very much off my list of potential next cars…

As per the above post, make sure you have a good long test drive on different roads, ask about spares availability including service parts, any previous recalls on the model you are interested in and look very closely at the build quality.
Driven quite a few different ones through work, not just BYD, could get a very preferential deal, but won't be.

I’ve driven a couple of 75 plate ones. The first I didn’t like. Floaty and unresolved suspension, too many bongs and I couldn’t figure out the drive train. The second was better but only because I figured out how to exploit the EV range.
Jaeco, pure EV, is better dynamically in my view, but even more complicated.

We have an Omoda 9.
Superb in every way.
Yes, it bings and bongs but 1 swipe down on the screen brings up the short cut options list.
Just tap what ever you want turned off.
Very easy to navigate which is good. Would prefer it stayed off but that’s euro regs.
The Omoda in South Africa stays on your chosen options

Sorry to be negative but just can't get past the name of it. "What are you driving these days mate?" "A sealion. It's great". I know that's fickle - just really don't like BYD's model names!
In the span of owning the car, how many times do you think you’ll be asked ‘what are you driving these days’.Hardly ever I imagine
I have the Seal on order which is basically the saloon version of the same car. The build quality is fantastic for the price and can't argue with the straight line performance but it is a bit vague in corners which I suspect is largely down to the awful eco tyres from factory.
The bongs are a feature of all new cars but you can set a shortcut to switch most of them off quickly. The same applies to the driver awareness sensor thing which can apparently be covered by tape to stop it screaming every time you wear sunglasses, yawn or look out the passenger window.
It does sound like an ice cream van at low speed though

The UK version of the omodo 9 has awful seats , you sit on the side bolsters .
Just ona side note a friend of mines got a brand new seal U DMI. design for £28k (PCP) and another friend says he got one for £23k cash on a new design model too. Ive not seen either of their cars so cant confirm the validity

I don't know, just for me can't get past the naming conventions of their range, even if they are good cars. If that makes me shallow that's absolutely fine. I saw one of their small cars a while ago and it had the full Build Your Dreams written out on the boot. Just looked pretty crap, in my opinion only of course. AddyT. said:
Yes I was jesting I know people won't really be asked that question!

Nah that doesn’t make you shallow man not at all.

BYD took the criticsm of the stupid name to heart and dropped the “Build Your Dream” name on all cars in Europe, it’s just BYD now.https://theinterface.uk/blog-posts/byd-to-drop-the...

Yet they still call their cars the Dolphin, Seal and Sealion..https://theinterface.uk/blog-posts/byd-to-drop-the...
I'm not sure a name even matters so long as its not offensive or negative. Over history, there's been some howlers such as Ford Probe, VW Bora, AMC Gremlin, and much worse. And a lot of manufacturers don't even bother with names at all, eg Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Renault, etc etc

What animals are acceptable?
The correct answer is of course Ora Funky Cat.At least it looks and has a name that suggests a bit of inspiration, unlike the numbered Jaecoo/Omoda JLR clones.
I have no idea whether the Funky Cat is any good as a car though
