Which used cars in the UK are actually cheap?
Discussion
Hey! I’m looking to buy a reliable used car in the UK and could really use some advice. My budget is around £8,000–£12,000. I mainly need something for daily city driving, the occasional motorway trip and weekend travel outside London.
I’ve been considering models such as the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Golf, BMW 1 Series and Audi A3, but I’m still unsure which offers the best balance of reliability, fuel economy, insurance costs and maintenance. Are there any affordable, premium-looking models?
I would appreciate honest recommendations from people with real ownership experience. Thanks!

Forget Audi & Volkeswaven and buy Skoda or Seat. Same engines, infotainment, switchgear and many other parts. Interior is different & lower quality & the car's may have less of an image if that's important to you. Sometimes a higher spec for less money. I bought a 1 year old Leon FR instead of a Golf GT in 2019 & it was £4.5k cheaper but had LED headlights & climate control that were extra cost options on the Golf. Although the Golf had better front seats.
My last car was a Seat & if I peeled the Seat badge off the engine cover there was an Audi badge underneath.
Never that a problem in 6 years in a Skoda & 7 years in a Seat except for repairs under warranty to failed rear wiper motor (Skoda) & leaking water pump (Seat). Neither caused a breakdown.

I think you'd need to narrow the parameters a bit more. Just listing models opens up a huge range of engines, gearboxes, trim levels etc etc... and as with any used car, you could line up two identical models and one could be great and the other a complete bomb scare. Appreciate this doesn't answer the question but I think you need to maybe filter things down further.
There are some very good options at this price point.

Agree if going VAG Seat/Skoda better value than VW or Audi. Rationally (and I m a serial German car buyer)
Bizarrely, I’m finding the opposite just now and I’m struggling to rationalise it. I started out looking for a Superb L&K or SportLine, probably 3/5 years old, ideally under 40k miles and I definitely want the 4x4.Apart from the cars being like hens teeth, either as a hatch or estate, they seem to be coming up around the same ballpark price as a similar age/spec A4 Avant with the 45 engine and significantly more expensive than the A6 including the 50 plug-in hybrid. It also seems I could have dozens of Audi Q things within budget. Am I missing something or is there a reason bigger Audis seem cheaper than mid-sized ones and the electrics are worth buttons?
Is there some awful pitfall with used (notably typically not Approved Used) Audis that I’m missing?

Suzuki Swift Sport. You can fold the seats down for the extra space. Perfect little city car and reliable.
Despite currently owning one, I'm going to ignore the Model 3 suggestion as at that budget, it'll be pre Heat Pump, which is said to make Winter a chore. Instead, I'm going to add to the call for the Swift Sport, specifically the middle generation (ZC32S) with the 134hp output. It's an absolute joy, in the city and out of it. LeoGrant said:

You pay a premium for a "premium" model.I recently bought a Mk4 Focus. I have been very impressed with it. It feels much more solid and "premium" than the Mk3 version did. It drives and handles very well too.
"Premium" or not, very good value.
