Any major horror stories with these?
Thinking we need to replace our cars within the household (to suit our toddler and newborn twins needs), so selling my Discovery 4, wife's Mini Countryman, I take on my wife's C Class, and she gets a new car. I originally suggested a VW Touran (trying to be sensible) but this has snowballed via my Wife's snobbiness about what she drives into an early 2nd gen Q7.
TBH they look ok, to me they don't seem to have the slightly iffy image (or upfront running costs) that the first gen have. My thought was spend a few grand on a Touran (or similar), which we'd probably hate but it would be abused by the kids, which would be fine because we'd hate it. But then my wife said why not spend "proper" money and actually have something we both like?
You'd probably say why sell the Discovery which is a perfect family car - and you're right - it is, but the tax is crippling, the fuel bill is crippling, the fear of something big breaking is crippling - especially now it's about to tick over 170,000 miles. We've had our fun with it for the past 5 years but I think it's time to move it on.
I'd say feel free with suggestions of alternatives but believe me I've suggested loads - either she doesn't like the badge, she doesn't like the look, or she doesn't like the fact it's not an Audi of some sort haha
I suggested an A6 C7 Avant or an S212 E Class, but the problem we have is we have two 360 car seats which the twins will be in soon (an absolute back saver) and the eldest child wouldn't then fit in the middle of them, so would have to go in a boot seat. I know you can get S212s with 7 seats but the rear ones come up as a pair and face backwards.

Hi Triumph Man,
Is your Disco a V8 petrol or a TD5? Why are the fuel bills crippling? Of course you have the option to just to run the Disco until it dies and in the meantime save up some cash for it's replacement (it's funny how a car refuses to break down when you do this!)
My rule in life is to never spend more money on something than you are comfortable with, it will just leave you resenting whatever it is you bought.
Friend had a Q8 with electrical gremlins - windows would go down at random times, usually after it was locked.
My wife was snobby about brands - she quilte liked the new-shape Kia Sorentos as they look smart and have quite upmarket interiors. We eventually got a Subaru Outback as achieves the goals of having a posh image and being reliable / japanese.

Hi,
Had both a 1st gen and 2nd gen, 1st gen I think was a 2006 TDI with air suspension, I really like the car and it felt very sturdy.
No issues with that until the wife pranged it...
2nd gen was a new car in 2016 and was the detuned 3.0TDI, didn't really notice and it was fast enough. Not one issue with that car and I put 50k on it in three years. It was comfortable and took plenty of people without feeling cramped. Did a road trip via Belgium and Germany cycling and I felt fresh after the first day of travel from the UK, so could easily hop on the bike at the other end.
I would have one again.

We have one now and these things crush long journeys with ease, Not that economical to run fuel wise though , On short runs I often see about 20 but on longer runs it will manage mid 30s
Overall running costs are similar to the other ones mentioned and so far nothing major has fallen off.
It does feel a bit numb to drive but that probably has something to do with the size/ weight of the thing
Overall I find its size a bit of a pain round town but I can live with that!
