Looking at one of the above about 13k to spend which gets a 65 plate or less. Any views as I've had both an E class and a 645 petrol a few years ago. The e class was reliable and the BMW while nicer had a few issues with oil leaks etc

I would be wary of rusty rear subframe issues with an E Class of that age and NOx sensors/adblue related issues.

I've just swapped a 66 plate c207 e class 350d (conv) for a 68 plate 350d 4matic coupe (the newer shape c238) not had a 640d but have run that engine in a 335d and had loads of 5 and 7 series BMWs, I would choose the 640d for me BMW was ahead of Merc at that time it's much fresher/better inside, stronger engine etc...(I didn't have any adblue or sensor issues with the 350d)

The newer shape e class merc is a huge step over the previous one and I'd probably (well I did) pick that over a 640d or 4 series of similar age.

I agree the cabin is a lot nicer in the BMW. Also does the 3.0d have any major faults. Chain issues etc?

I've had both of those engines(in a 640d and a GLC350d), and I liked both, but the 640d is difficult to resist because of the way it looks though for me. The steering is awful in the 640d though in my view(so lifeless for a BMW), but they are a wonderful overtaking machine though I reckon.

Subframes should be fine by that late a plate, but the w212 is really dated now. The w213 is a much nicer car.

I think every engine can have issues including the N57 and the OM642, I think the best you can do is buy one with a FSH, I also think the condition of the car tells you a lot about the owners it's had.
