Looked at an Audi A1 today, 2013 with 96k on clock. Have sent the below email to dealer. Are my expectations fair or am I asking too much ??

To confirm the work required that we discussed, I would like the following issues investigated and fully resolved before I can complete the purchase of the vehicle:

Investigate and Resolve Heavy Steering:

The steering must feel completely light and smooth. I have been advised that the steering is measurably too heavy for an Audi A1, which could point to an under-powered pump, air trapped in the system, or a binding steering column joint.

Investigate and Resolve Drivers-Side Whirring:

There is a distinct whirring sound coming from the driver's side engine bay area. I have been advised this is not normal and is likely a failing alternator or an auxiliary belt component that requires replacement.

Formal Clutch Inspection:

As noted during the viewing, the clutch biting point is exceptionally high. Please perform a formal clutch inspection and provide a written report of a formal workshop road/torque test confirming zero slippage, alongside a written 3 month warranty specifically covering the clutch mechanism and dual-mass flywheel.

Alternatively, please provide a quote to fit a new clutch kit prior to handover.

Thanks

Kind regards,

edc

On a 5 grand car?

You’d be lucky to get an air freshener.

Plenty out there.

The Audi A1 seems to be the car that daughters of a certain age aspire to.

I’m currently in discussions with my daughter regarding the replacement of my Alfa Mito. TBH I wouldn’t consider an Audi at that age and price point.

Another one like an Aygo or Citigo/Up!/Mii

A 13 year old A1 you want it to be new.

Formally inspect clutch! You are in cloud cuckoo land.

Any 13 yr old VW group car is likely to throw up mechanical and electrical problems on a fairly regular basis.

Get her something petrol and Japanese - at that age and price point it's your best bet for relatively trouble free motoring.

The expectations and wording of the email will probably make most involved in car sales share it round the guys, have a laugh at it, then ignore all future contact as being honest, you sound like an absolute nightmare customer. I'd look at buying her something new as it sounds like 13 year old, 100k cars aren't for you.

And part of me thinks this has to be a joke... or AI / bot trolling.

One of the best opening posts I've read for a while! OP I'd just admit yourself that you'll only be happy with a new car and go down that route.

The OP would be better off buying a newer Polo or Fabia.

The fact that there's issues means the dealer doesn't care and you'll have problems with future resolutions.

I think you would be better off looking at new cars, not 13 year old cars with 100000 miles on them, dodgy service history and numerous owners!

This is what happens when you rely on ChatGPT to do these jobs.

Realistically, that dealer now has you pegged as "hard work" and will probably not bother themselves - they want to sell the car, not necessarily to you.

If I knew what I was talking about I wouldn't have posted the question ...... can't say the answers from most of you have been what I expected from this community. Thanks though to people who have just said I am hoping for too much .... not all of us have the money to buy new cars, (by the way insurance on this is group 9 which is part of the attraction, not it's badge !)
