I’ve just returned from a 2 ½ week, almost 3,000 mile European road trip with the family. We drove from the North West to Lido de Venezia and back, spending some time in the Italian Lakes on the way and taking in the Simplon Pass and the Gotthard Pass on the way there and back.

It was our first big trip in the X5 45e since buying it in January and it was perfect for the journey, comfortable, spacious, quick enough when needed and made long days on the road easy with Driving Assistant Professional.

What surprised me though was that as I came towards the end of the trip and even more since I have returned, I have started to question the value of having a car like the X5 for daily family duties. It was perfect for that trip, but for 90% of the time it feels like overkill.

I know this is no surprise, it’s an SUV that lives mainly in suburbia. But it got me thinking about alternatives if I was to make a change, and the obvious answers are probably either a G31 540i touring or a G32 640i GT. Whilst in short supply, both seem to be available for around £20k, which would significantly reduce the monthly running costs (even when you factor in additional fuel costs).

What else should I consider as I think about whether to make this surprising and sudden change to a car I really enjoy but don’t really make full use of?

Max budget of £20k to make the savings worthwhile, enjoyable to drive and can be used for occasional long family trips – albeit not often as long as the one we’ve just returned from.
