Hello lovely people

I’m after a family hatch for no more than £10.5k.
Mainly city driving (8 thousand a year if that), has to be petrol for this reason, no saloony hatch’s the missus refuses to drive them! Annoying.
Has to be around 140/150bhp I don’t want to be too bored when driving it!
Ideally the mod cons ie heated seats, reversing sensors I’m not expecting miracles for the budget, ideally no high mileage as puts the missus and if I’m honest myself off too, no more than 60-70k.

Any help and advice would be appreciated I’m not very clued up with cars unfortunately, I know the basics and what to look out for ish.

Focus MK4 1.5 petrol.

Good performance, economy, drives well (estate has independent rear suspension), comfortable, interior good. Feels well built.

Question, aren’t the ecoboost engines terrible? I’ve seen “ecoboom” quotes lol

Ecoboom refers to the 1.0 3 cylinder engine.

Ecoboom refers to the 1.0 3 cylinder engine.

And, after the early ones had some coolant pipes changed, only if the timing belt hasn't been looked after and changed.

It also depends if you want a car with a comfortable ride or not.

Unfortunately missus won’t drive this, I’ve been on at her for years about VRS Octavia’s and she won’t budge! Women eh!

Can you charge at home?

If so, something like an ID3 would be a perfect fit. A lot roomier in both interior and boot than an A3, much quicker too and RWD makes it quite fun to throw around.

I’d choose one over anything petrol powered with the rest of your requirements.

You can use a 3 pin charger (which at that age should have come with the car when new but only £150 or so if you do need to get one).

Would top up the car about 6-7 miles per hour (possibly 8-9 with mainly town use). So if you plugged in from say 7pm to 7am, that’d give you 72-108 miles of range top up each day.

72miles a day five days a week gives well over 1400miles a month, so your 8000 miles a year sounds easily doable if evenly distributed without needed to get a 7kW wall charger.

Not everybody agrees, but my experience of the non-vrs Octavia is that it is very over-rated, especially the estate which also has a horrible chassis. The Focus is much better. The more recent Astras are apparently quite good.

Average cost of a charging point install is roughly £1000 but its well worth it if you plan to go that way, most third party ones are the same.
You do need to see what costs your tariff has regarding charging overnight etc as some discount the overnight rates but Jack up the daily ones and standing charges to get something back.

In all honesty I’m not a fan of either looks wise. I’m toying between the Kia Ceed however struggling to find one within budget with an electric handbrake (another annoying feature missus) wants & the Audi A3 however struggling to understand if I’m paying for the badge behind the car with the Audi.
