Niro 2023, Kona 2024 or? (Hyrbrid Vs pure Petrol)
Discussion
So it's been a pain to find the wife a car, she has a 2011 Mazda 2 which is on its last legs/costing money when its worth nothing now - plus its too small.
We are between a 2023 Niro and a 2024 Kona, we both liked the Niro but she is worried its a hybrid and that is more complex. So she looking now at a Kona as they do a pure petrol one.
I'd get an EV but it's not what she wants so no need to suggest those.
IMO context is always key, so here is is:
- Buy outright and keep for 5-10 years
- Cheap to run, so must be reliable, low cost parts/servicing and such - and no worries of potential huge bills
- Not massive, i.e max about 4.3ish length, she wants smaller but coneeds we need a Niro or such size due to the kids getting bigger
- 16k budget, maybe can push a little if needed.
My critiera as I'll sometimes drive it if we are using her car
- Nice interior, if I have to sit in a boring/slow car its at least got to be a nice place to be (I have a C63S so most cars feel slow)
- Roomy for a 6ft 3 15st+ guy, i.e seat goes low enough and pedal area doesnt feel cramped or knees hitting the steering wheel etc, whilst a kid can still sit behind me
I've been steering towards cars with good warranty, so Yaris Cross/Corolla but they are a bit older examples for that money.
Niro seems to nail it, drove one and liked it - really smooth, VERY spacious inside for the fact it's not overly big outside.
Kona also seemed nice and spacious.
I said she'd have 3 years warranty left on the Kia, hybrids are common now and that engine has been around since 2016 so unlikely to be unreliable, but I do understand if it went bad out of warranty it could be expensive.
I guess modern cars do bigger miles now but on the flip side also have more to go wrong, more to spend money fixing.
She is not a car person, so just wants to spend as less as possible running it as just see's it as an expense rather than an interest/passion like I do with my car.
We sat in various cars, she thinks a VW is too expensive to run and we want an auto so are put off by the DSG as its the dry clutch least reliable one it seems. Seat seem too dated for the generation we are shopping in, Reanault Capture also a hybird, and other things are too big or feel too small iside, i.e Bayon, even tried a Lexus UX and I I looked huge in the seat.
Any thoughts on Hybirds, the Niro - Kona etc? Is her worry of hybrid's a worthly concern? Looking at cars with sub 40k miles and she does 2-4k a year only.
