Buying an older BMW M340i vs buying a standard but newer car

Hi I was looking at buying a M340i for around £29-30k for that budget it would need to be 2019-2020 and around 50k miles.


Do you guys think it’s worth spending that much on an older car (7 years) if planning to keep the car for a long time I.e til 150,00 miles say? Or should I opt for a newer car like a Mercedes CLA petrol or Audi A5 petrol which will be more newer for the same price ?

I know the BMW has a reliable B58 engine but will this be more or less reliable than cars with a less powerful/robust engines but are newer and look more fresh?

In 8 years time the 2019 BMW will be 15 years old - end of life
Whereas a 2023/2024 car will be only 5/6 years old in 8 years time ?

Only you can decide that really, for me personally as someone who has looked at them I just couldn't justify the price tag.
I would maybe consider an M3/4 but the 3 is still very expensive too.

Why not spend half that and buy the 2.0L version of the same age, like the BMW 328i or whatever, you could get a Golf GTI/R if that's what you fancy, and then spend the rest on something really fast/fun/interesting?

15-20k will get you an M4, or a Porsche 911, a Cayman S, etc.

Okay, if you've only got space for one car, then the M340i is cool, but if you want a new car, then buy a new car.

Friends don't let friends buy 4 pot BMWs, outside of a very limited list, all of which are more than 30 years old.

Are they really that bad? I rather fancied a manual F31, which limits the choice to 4-pots.

If you’re looking at an M340i, then surely you wouldn’t be interested in a 2L petrol.


If you don’t mind a 2L petrol, why wouldn’t you get a newer car with warranty etc?

If you plan on keeping the car for a very long time as in 100k on top, have a good think about buying a full fat M3?

The depreciation will always be lower & if you use a good Indy the running costs aren't that far apart, yes the car will be older but it won't be anywhere near end of life.

I have a 2005 CLK55 & 2009 CLK63 both are mint & nowhere near end of life, update the infotainment & you'll have a great car for years to come.

You'll also have one of the best looking saloon cars on the road, this & the Giulia always standout when I see one on the road.

Giulia is a good shout, you can get a very nice Veloce for £30k and even a Quadrifoglio if you don't mind a private sale.

It's up to you though OP, do you mind the car being a bit older but with more performance? An older car may cost more to run but that will be offset by depreciation.
