Sold a used car. Buyer not happy
Discussion
I would welcome thoughts on what to do.
My son asked me to sell his car. It s a 2012 car with 130k miles on the clock. MOT lapsed earlier this year.
I advertised the car on Facebook marketplace, lots of picture and a clear statement there is no MOT
Someone came today, took the car for a short drive, said it drives well. I told them I don t know much about the car as it belonged to my son. I told them I did know the head gasket was replaced this year.
They bought the car and drove home.
This evening I get a text saying not good . I haven t replied.
Do people think I should reply? If so, say what?
I m pleased to be rid of the car, but concerned the buyer knows where I live.
Car was £1500. With MOT similar cars are nearly £3k
Thoughts?
Forgot to say, buyer signed a receipt saying Sold as Seen. No warranty given or implied.

Don t reply. They are basically realising they are driving around in a car with no mot, tax and therefore insurance. As long as you stated any issues that you are aware of, then you have done what you can. Let them do the running if they have buyers remorse.
They just said the car overheated today. I said I don’t know much about the car, which is true. I have driven it no more than two miles it’s stood for the last 6 months just being moved a few yards around my drive.
You may want to look at these threads, they all say pretty much what others on this thread have.

They only bought it today! It s overheated as they drove home.
Well they say it overheated. Not necessarily the same as it did overheat. ETA: if you really feel sufficiently bad to do something, and there is no f
king way in a gazillion years I would in your shoes, tell them to bring it back tomorrow, driving slowly and carefully to stop it overheating, and you’ll given them a refund. I’d be willing to bet they will refuse because they want to keep the car and want some money as well. Because the car is fine.

I feel bad for them though.
Why, they knew they were buying a car with no MOT and it's the cheaper end of the scale, anyhow they are probably trying it on. Soon they will tell you a sob story about having the car inspected (they always get it inspected after buying it!) and you will likely be sent an inflated "quote" to repair (a non existent problem) and be asked to pay it.Don't reply, block and move on.
This is exactly why people don't bother with private sales any more, preferring to trade in or offload to WBAC, a private sale can be too much grief and stress.
Blue - you know the drill.
“The car was sold as seen, no representation was made as to condition and it was made clear that it did not have a valid MOT. You signed a receipt confirming that the car was sold as seen with no warranty given or implied. Whilst I understand that it must be disappointing for you that the car has overheated, that it did so is not my responsibility and nor do you have any grounds for recourse against me”
Make sure you keep a copy of the ad that made clear that it didn’t have an MOT.

Slightly beside the point, but why did your son ask you to sell it, instead of selling it himself? Did he know it would overheat? Why did he replace the HG?
Son moved away and started to do high miles for work so got an EV. I got fed up of his car on my drive so we agreed I could sell it for him. Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
