Hi people,

sold a mk3 MX5 over the weekend, car was sold with a receipt for welding repairs done by the previous owner last year, advertised as wings being a bit rusty, car was also undersealed by previous owner.

buyer flew over from Spain, inspected car for several hours while funds were sorted. now got the car back to Spain and sent pictures and videos of holes underneath which i was not aware of.

buyer is stating he will get a quote for rust repairs and wants us to split the bill, haven't replied to that part yet, however have apologised and informed him i was not aware of how the underside was as i hadn't had the car on a ramp.

i want to do the morally right thing however i sold the car for £1350 and it was inspected thoroughly by the buyer. i'd assume the bill will be most of the cars value.

what would you do?

He inspected it “for several hours” and they’re notorious for rust. I’d politely decline - what’s he expect for £1350?

yeah my thoughts exactly. he flew over as they're much cheaper here than in Spain, so should be aware our climate is not good for them.

It is the buyers problem, tell him this politely and then block him.

Inspected a car for several hours but failed to spot rust? Did he leave his guide dog at home? He should be invited to go forth, caveat emptor etc.

There seems to be a new thread on this sort of thing weekly. If your buying a car as a private sale, there is no warranty or anything so don't expect to be able to go back to the seller with any issues. If you want a warranty, pay extra to buy from a dealer. Seriously what does he expect for £1350.

As the seller you have been honest, he's inspected the car thoroughly, it's not your problem anymore.

I'm the buyer, I message you with a quote for £500 to repair the rust which I want to split with you. You're a chump and you agree. I don't bother with the repairs or the repairs are fictional. I'm £250 up. biggrin

Just ignore him. You’re not a car dealer (I assume) so not warranty given or implied. His car, his problem, unless you advertised it materially incorrectly ie claimed it was rust free. Besides, what’s he gonna do; drive it back from Spain?

I get you want to do the right thing, but you saying that means you're not surprised that he's found holes underneath?

Flipside is he inspected it for hours, did he not look underneath??

Proper rust repairs on an MX5 underside are going to cost more than £1350 I'd think.

What if they come back to you asking for half of £3,000?

If you really do feel bad, then offer them a refund, chances are they're not going to be bringing the car back to you.

Otherwise, point out to them it was a private sale, I'm not a car expert, and I'm not going to be sending you any money, you inspected the car for hours.

Tell him to send you details/photos of said rust.

Inform him you will get a quote and if he returns the car to the UK you will help cover the costs for the repairs.

He'll never agree to it having to drive it all of the way from Spain and back (fuel costs alone), plus his time and obviously he cannot expect it to get repair while he waits so would probably need to travel home and return.

That'll politely tell him to jog on.

Its a (becoming more) common scam/extortion. Just tell him to F*** O**.

Or you just tell him to jog on, politely and block him rather than offering some convoluted resolution knowing he will decline!!

well its an MX-5 and the guy seemed very nice when we met and chatted.

i don't like being a D**k to people but also understand that he did have time to look and he definitely did look underneath it

appreciate your reply though

Absolutely no way I would be entertaining giving the buyer any money for that, he has inspected it for several hours not not shone a light underneath it? I don't believe that for a second.

It's well known MX-5's like to rust and £1350 for any car is likely to have some issues and need money spent.

Tell him it's no longer your issue and to not contact you again.

Don't entertain him sending you pictures and the rest of it because it encourages hm to keep pushing.

Probably not even a video of the OP's old car.

I'd guess even terminally rusty MX5s have some parts value?

Opened this thread not expecting to see it relating to a £1350 car. I know different ends of the market vary in peoples expectations but seriously.

Don't offer him anything and ignore people that say you should.

His car now, his problem.

Blocked.
