Another What car - 50K for an investment
Discussion
a mate of mine - who is fairly wealthy these days) is thinking of spending 50k as an investment on a car. He's not a huge car man, so has turned to me for advice. I've told him to buy a property but he's already got several of those...
I think its partly to amuse his two sons....
So any thoughts?
Personally I think I'd go for a nice early 80 Aston v8 (somrthing like http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/classic-car-pa...

If you're not a car person, why buy a car? Unless you're very canny they're unlikely to make much money. If you're an enthusiast then braking even while having fun is better than turning a profit, but if you're just after cash there must be a better way of doing it?
You'd need something classic I think - if it's recent £50k is too much for an 'everyman' cult modern classic and too little for serious metal. A nice coach built Derby Bentley maybe? I do like the ('80s) V8 Vantage idea - that should buy a relatively nice original one. What about an E-Type? A bit too obvious, not likely to appreciate much, but fairly sound. A somewhat special retro 911 - a 1970s RS perhaps?

I have suggested to him that its not a good place to put money..
I doubt he'll go for anything as mainstream as a BMW.
50k is a guide - I'd guess he could easily double it for something special.
Still at least he's promised to insure me and let me drive it
If he could double it then no question - Porsche 993 RS (this will go up in value).I doubt he'll go for anything as mainstream as a BMW.

Even better Porsche 964 3.8RS (but don't know how much they cost - maybe a dealer on here can advise).
There is only one obvious answer...Testarossa.
They will *never* go below a hard limit of £25k for anything like a half decent earlier one, whilst the more sorted later cars wont go below £30k even at the moment in their lowest ebb.
All their Flat 12s and classic V12s of late have only been moving one way.

might be slightly above budget, but i personally think ferrari 512bbi's are underpriced and getting more press recently.
246gt's were £50-60k a few years back, double that today.
Missed the boat on the Boxer.246gt's were £50-60k a few years back, double that today.
Testarossa or perhaps 348 GTC for me.
Am hoping 355 prices hold for a few more years yet mind, though I'd allow them to plummet to a level I can afford right now!

I would consider something LHD, you have a wider European and US market, even the Japanese prefer their classics that way....the reason I say that is in 10 years time, we may be in a different position in the Uk with use of our classics?...At least with a Leftie, you may have more liquidity to sell to a wider market base?
Makes a lot of sense providing it's something that was exclusively or mostly LHD - perhaps less so if there are plentiful RHD examples though.BMW Z8's are well into the £70,000 plus range and are massively overpriced in the UK. Cheaper in Germany and the USA.
Why is the possible investor so anti BMW. The E30 M3 is possibly one of the best investments possible and a real world classic. Aston's are not great cars, never will be and those built in the late 1980's are dreadful to drive and massively expensive to restore.
Testarossa, prone to bodywork issues, the interior is terrible and the driving experience is dreadful.
993 Porsche Turbo is a classic, 964 RS is near to £50,000 and a certain classic. 993 GT2 would not be a bad buy if one could be found!

Likewise the same about the BB. Not stopped the price rises. Why is the possible investor so anti BMW. The E30 M3 is possibly one of the best investments possible and a real world classic. The 964RS is overpriced.
993tt is a good shout I think. The 993GT2 is a tad more than £50k.
The E30 is already solid on price. Only the very special/best ones will keep those solid prices.
Astons have always had a price cachet, esp those with a certain style/USP.
why the hell are people quoting cars like the 964, 993 rs and E30 evos that have already shot up ? Those ships set sail LONG ago. Disagree with the 993tt as well.. most are already over priced and beauty aside, they are not the iconic drive that one would hope for.
my vote goes for a 996 GT3RS... cheapest they've ever been at the moment and in 5-10 years time will be worth 100k+ no question. they made FAR fewer of them than the 993 and 964 rs yet held in the same regard by enthuisiasts and the press.
that's what i'm getting anyway
