BMW X5 45e - opinions on this one (an alternates)
Discussion
I posted a while ago looking at the Volvo XC90 for which I have a couple of test drives booked for Sunday. A couple of posters mentioned the 45e X5 and I’ve found one close by that we like the look of, albeit 2 years older than a similar budget Volvo – so out of manufacturers warranty.
Just after some opinions on the car, price and spec in the first instance as well as anybody whos owned one and can comment on reliability for this - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202504221... I saw a good readers cars thread for a 2019 model that had a number of software issues but were they resolved by 2022?
Other 3 options aside formt he X5 and XC90 (We need a large boot) are Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 sportline (24/25 MY), Kia Sorrento PHEV 4 (24 /25MY) and an X3 (24 plate), most likely 3.0 petrol as the PHEV eats into boot space a fair bit – or alternatively an ex-demo new shape X3 is just a touch over budget - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202501137...

The 45e is proving pretty reliable, I've known some issues with software but most have been sorted under warranty.
If you want added peace of mind, you can get a BMW (sometimes this involves an inspection) warranty on the car you're looking at.
A very good alternative is the GV80 the only downside is they're not hybrid but you will have 5 years of warranty & you'll also be in a brand new car:

The fit & finish is as good as the premium brands the drivetrains proven & these are close to you.

Trouble is they are at best 25mpg which we don't want. Looking at PHEV as my wife has a 12 mile each way daily commute but we'd have the benefit of ICE for the longer journeys we doIf you want added peace of mind, you can get a BMW (sometimes this involves an inspection) warranty on the car you're looking at.

The 45e is a good shout for your use but I'd be seriously looking at the iX for that kind of age/spend... of course you'd have to bite the EV bullet (oh and avoid looking directly at the car) but with a 105kWh useable battery, any longer trip is simple enough.

(there are cheaper ones with a few more miles)

I had a 45e back in 2021, it was a brilliant car fully optioned etc etc… even did around 50 miles per charge which on a hybrid was pretty good at the time.
The only thing that put me off was the 3kw charging on these (no problem on the 50e as they have 7kw charging).
If you’re ok with slow charging, great car.
Now have the iX and just as happy with that if not more so as it goes 300 miles between charging. I love really high spec cars so my iX is the M60 which has near enough every option as standard.
Pic of the 45e for reference.
