Evening all!

I'm looking to swap my old Kia Sportage for something with a lot more room for kids, a dog and camping gear. I've test driven a Dacia Jogger and quite liked it, but have been offered a decent deal on a '72 plate VW Caddy 2.0 TDI DSG auto. It's only done 15,000 miles and has the remainder of its VW warranty until November 2025.

My main concern is reliability. Are there any particular issues with this engine, or is it known to be reliable if well maintained? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Front oil seal can leak, ignore vw cambelt schedule, dsg can be weak on the 7 speed adblue will probably break at some point

VW quality has plummeted since dieselgate, so a warranty is a must (although doesn't help much if the car is off the road and in their garage for several months being fixed like with my mums)

I have a jogger and it's a pretty decent car, seem to have held their value well too (I paid £19k for the extreme se in grey back in 2022). It's also not a van unlike the caddy so quite fun to drive.

Depending on ages and number of kids, you won't fit 3 car seats in the middle, 2 car seats will fit but unless they're narrow you won't fit anyone in the middle seat (certainly not an adult), so you'll be using one of the rear seats which means less boot space. So it's a brilliant family car for 5 or more, as long as no more than 2 need a car seat.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the feedback.

Am I right in thinking that the 1.5 TSI petrol is a wet belt unit?

I bought a new 2.0TDI Passat Estate in Jan 2020 for University runs and family holidays. Just ticked over 100k when I part exchanged it for the last 2024 2.0TDI Estate. With only 1 year of Uni left, it's going to be our 10+ year car with it's stupendous range and economy as you can't buy a diesel in the B9 model.

If you are worried about warranty/reliability then VW do a 2 year service/warranty package which is about as close as you can get to a manufacturers warranty. It's normally discounted by 20% once or twice a year and the car has to go in to a VW dealer for inspection before they will cover it.

The VW all in no longer needs an inspection beforehand as far as I’m aware, and the car must be less than six years old/100k miles.
