Trying to decide between the 2. Love both, both tick all my boxes.

Alpine is going to cost about £20,000 over 4 years, £6k ish upfront & £440 a month on PCP, but 200 miles range is £4. (There is no sense buying outright interest rate is 2.9%)

OG M2 is say £28,000 paid up front, so no finance costs, but will depreciate, so in 4 years likely worth, £16k maybe? Is that about reasonable? Or would a 12 year old M2 not be wroth that?
200 mile range is maybe £40 also potential for some bills say allow £1500 a year for service etc.

Am I right in thinking that actually both are costing me pretty much the same over the ownership, BUT with the BMW I have a car worth whatever its worth at the end?

The maths appear slightly off - £6k deposit and 48x£440 = £27,120. Were you maybe working on 3 years for the Alpine (which would be £21,840)?

If you go with the 48 month option, both cars are costing you essentially the same in outright purchase price. You don't saw how many miles per year you do but it looks like you have access to cheap charging which could make the Alpine considerably cheaper to run. I've owned an OG M2 and got around 30mpg from it in normal use,

So you're essentially right, the difference is at the end of ownership the M2 would be yours outright and worth well north of £10k, whereas the Alpine would be handed back (there may be a bit of equity in it if it's worth more than the final payment). That's the price you're paying for a newer car.

I like the A290, yet to see one in the flesh but I totally get the appeal. It will feel a lot more modern inside than the BMW but that's not exactly a bad place to spend time either.

If practicality is an issue, bear in mind the rear seats and boot in the Alpine look pretty restrictive from the reviews I've seen. The M2 is surprisingly practical despite what people will tell you about coupes - managed a family holiday with 2 large suitcases and 2 children in the back with no issues at all.

Also not sure if there's a particular reason you want the OG M2, but you could probably get a decent Competition in budget. I've not driven one but by all accounts it's a better all round drive.

The Alpine is PCP its £39k! so its £5.6K, £442 PCM & £15.2K final payment

Tbh I dont need the extra performance of the comp, they are still a fair few £££ more and I reckon the OG ticks all my boxes and apparently is quite a bit lower cost to run (that is based on youtube videos so might be rubbish)

I dont do many miles, maybe 6500 or so not massive.

I think I am scared of the M2 going wrong and costing a fortune to fix

I can't imagine the running costs being hugely different between the OG and Comp, but the OG is a great car anyway.

With your mileage I wouldn't worry too much about bills. You'd have to really break the M2 to come off worse than the overall cost of the Alpine, so if the M2 is the car you want, go for it. It will definitely be more exciting and the sort of car you want to take for a drive for the sake of it (that novelty doesn't wear off), though I can see the Alpine being a lovely car to live with and a great looking thing. Nice choice to have!

haha honestly my fear with the Alpine is that the novelty will wear thin after a few months...

I'd have thought a pretty common car in the BMW would be a lot cheaper to fix (and more reliable/well built to start with?) than an Alpine?

The Alpine is basically a Renault 5 but with a few bells and more power and its brand new, so if there are any issues its their problem not mine :P To be honest it feels really well nailed together, certainly compared to a RS Clio I had years ago.

I had an M2 OG LCI and used it for everything from daily driver to track toy. I’ve drove lots of miles in the comp on road and track as well.

OG cars are by and large pretty bullet proof. Most reliable car I’ve ever had. Just buy on condition and full service history.

You’ll be nowhere near £1500 a year in maintenance. £500 a year would be more than enough especially on 6.5k miles a year.

Comps are more expensive to run down to the engine the servicing costs are just more. S55 engine isn’t as reliable and crank hub issue is well documented.

For OG vs Comp test drive both as they offer different experiences. I firmly prefer the OG which I find more raw, sounds better and weight is noticeable. Comp has better seats, faster engine and remaps really well but it’s toned down and more mature so losses the fun and is more mini M4. Both 10/10 cars.

I drive a Tesla now so I’m firmly in the pro EV camp. In no universe would I ever take the Alpine over an M2.
