2020 Kia Sportage 1.6D MH - Overheating Auto Transmission
Discussion
Hi,
I have had my 2020 Sportage (mild hybrid diesel, auto) for nearly 18 months and it has been a great car up until now.
Last Sunday I was on a very quiet motorway, sitting at the limit with the speed limiter on, when the revs suddenly climbed for no obvious reason. I eased off the accelerator and a warning came up saying something like “Automatic transmission overheating, stop vehicle”.
I pulled over and let it idle for a while until the temperature came down, then set off again. I watched the temperature creep straight back up, and when I stopped the second time there was a burning smell. At that point I gave up and the AA took the car home.
I bought it used from Arnold Clark (not my first choice, but it was the best sportage available locally). They told me to bring it in for a one hour non intrusive inspection at £162. If they found a warranty fault, the £162 would be covered as part of the repair. They could not see it for two weeks, could not repair anything until mid November, and there was no courtesy car offered. They said if I dropped it off as a breakdown they would try to squeeze it in earlier than in 2 weeks.
Two days later I got a text saying they would look at it that day. A couple of hours after that they sent a video saying there were no historic faults stored, they had driven it 25 miles, and the transmission temperature never got anywhere near a worrying level. They did find a split rear axle bush, which to my surprise they said is covered under warranty and they can replace next week at no cost. However, they still want me to pay the £162, because the bush is not related to the reason I brought it in. That seems unfair to me.
What I really want to know is whether any other Sportage owners have had this transmission overheating warning and then found it just went away? I cannot understand how a warning like that would come up on the dash and not be logged anywhere. I feel like I am being fobbed off by Anold Clark.
Any advice or similar experiences would be much appreciated.
Thanks
