As the front / rear aero balance is far to rearward on most M12's anyway, very flat.

By adding a Gurney strip you've increased the drag as well.

Hi Phil I was told the best wing angle on our cars was 16degrees from the flat , and does a gurney strip not reduce wing drag ??

I'm still chasing rear end grip so I run my wing at the optimum angle but interested in any opinions . Tux

Gurney strips increase drag as well as increasing downforce. You never get downforce for free!

As for chasing rear end grip, at what speeds? Anything under around 80mph is pure mechanical in reality. And what grip? Cornering or straight line booting it? If you've been piling on rear camber angle your corner grip will be better, but you'll loose straight line grip.

Hi Phil , slow to med speed corners are the main problem but i think its more to do with the fact the front is so good !!!! could probably sort it by taking off some front end but im reluctant to do that as i love the way the car feels , could run a bit more rear camber maybe 1/2 a dgrees and could fit bigger rear tyres but again i,m already getting some rubbing issues with the std setup , have sketched out a rear antiroll bar but sorting that is not going to be easy :-) have some new rear 888's on order will see if they also help !! I set mine flat because by raisimg the wing it's now over 50% more effective and as phil says the cars are rear downforce heavy as STD...... If you set the wing angle too much will you increase drag and make the downforce less as well.

As it's a single plane wing surelly it has just a single sweat spot of downforce without more drag?

Rear grip on the Noble is not an aero issue, to move the balance forward you will have to make huge changes, therefore the issue is mechanical grip, spend the money on a set of Pirelli Trofeo's
http://www.pirelli.com/tyre/ww/en/motorsport/sheet...

I'll put money on it,they are expensive but they will inspire confidence, in the few laps I did at Silverstone I could feel the extra grip, and that was over Corsa's

Obviously increased grip at both ends may highlight other issues.

I used Lees demo (FX54LOA?) M400 for months, with and without rear wing. The wing made it slightly more stable in high speed corners, slower in a straight line but most wouldnt know it was there. The wing profile and small endplates make it more of an aesthetic enhancement. I would imagine the gurney will just slow it down to be honest. I always thought front end grip could be better in the high speed, although I know the dynamics dampers were quite a bit better than the billies - so I wouldnt chase rear end grip unless you have already been there and done that. Good luck. Regards, Jon.

cheers for the advice guys

i decided to do something about the rear grip after getting a few px rides in some modded nobles at snetterton. I had already improved the front end and realised my rear end was a bit looser

16 degs looks quite agressive - i decided to try it at a lesser angle and see how it goes

the gurney strip will increase downforce and drag - however the drag effect is much less than a more agressive wing angle for the same downforce

driving the car without the rear wing did seem to make it accelerate faster at higher speeds (over 130)

the beauty of the gurney is if i don't like it - it can easily be unbolted

(for those that don't know my surname is Gurney !)

Simon, didn't think there was much wrong with how your car was handling at Silverstone, as for rear grip l agree with Adrian that in slow to medium speed corners it's down to mechanical grip, don't forget that your rears are 'well used' & at there end of life so would suggest a new set will improve things.
I have looked into fitting ARB's but not easy, also by fitting them it will then require other things altering to get the car handling better & for what may be gained i'm reluctant to upset an existing good balance.

Thanks Kev a good point !!! i have the same issue on my std bridgestones speaking to Callum he feels the front is too good and i should dial in some understeer !! going to go up a tyre size on back to 275 hopefully that will help . tux
