Funny noise on downshift?

Hi all

Im getting a funny noise when i lift the clutch after changing on a downshift. Its very hard to describe what it sounds like!

Any ideas?

could be the clutch release bearing

does the clutch rattle when you are idling, and does the noise go if you press the clutch ?

(i could also be the gearbox - 5 or 6 speed ?)

I think its gearbox related. doesnt sound like clutch release bearing. Been out again, and very randomly the only way i can describe it is like the noise a sit on lawnmower would make as you pressed the accelerator.. That makes me sounds like a complete chump haha

does it only make it when you engage the gear on downshift if the revs are not matched... ie can you avoid it if you blip the throttle changing down?

Before I changed to a different clutch my standard car used to do that every so often. Like an induced vibration for a short time? Never did find it but it ran for 19K miles without any ill effects and the clutch looked fine when it came out.

I have 2 new clutches and they both make this noise on downshift... my standard clutch never did it though but been in others with the same clutch (singe paddle) and they all make it.

sounds a bit like a brief grinding noise when the clutch is engaged... its the clutch catching when the rev differential is very high and down to the material of the clutch apparently.
I dont like it and want to find a way to remove it.

If it's the same noise I get then it sounds like a wooooooooommmmmm sort of hum that lasts maybe a second when the road speed is higher than the revs required in the gear just selected.
It's a similar noise I've experienced with slightly loose pads when braking from reversing, almost like the pads have worn neatly in the forward direction only, if that makes sense?
I put it down to a slight misalignment of the plate, possibly worn splines or uneven pressure from the cover.

Interesting. I drove it again this morning and it doesn't make the noise when you select the gear. Only when you lift the clutch. Doesn't seem to matter what revs really to a point. I'll see if I can get a vid or something

Both mine have done that noise, and you get similar in a few Ford cars I've driven so I've never worried about it. Doesn't seem to do any harm.
