Hello Gents,

Apologies for raising a couple of pretty boring questions but I would really apprectiate the benefit of your experience in a couple of areas:

First of all, exhaust systems: My 3R is still fitted with the stock system and I'm seriously considering chopping it in for something of much better quality (plus benefitting from liberating a few of those restricted horses but this isn't my primary focus). I have watched with interest over the years as many of you have gone down different routes, Rousch, H&S etc.

Given that some of you will have been running these replacement systems for a while now, what has your experience been from a longevity, quality, noise perspective - worth the investment?

I seem to remember one system being designed with 'flexi sections' close to the manifolds and additional supports for the turbos to take stress off the manifolds, seems like a good move to me, do all the aftermarket systems have this?

Is there a general concensus on what the best relacement system is?

Secondly, a left field question(!): I am aware of the general opinion/fact that the 3R wheels are a potential weak point and know that many have been replaced with compmotives etc over the years however, I do really like the design of the originals.

Has anyone here managed to have their original 3R wheels successfully and properly restored complete with replacement fake bolts and the diamond cut / polished rim? If so, where did you manage to get this done?

Thanks in anticipation of your responses!

Hi Si , plenty of choice on exhaust and most fit flexi's , work out what you need from a system eg are you going to go on track ? if so the roush is too loud you need something that makes 97db to get on most tracks , all the exhaust make good power so thats not a issue , they all cost something like £1500 for a system .

There are a few of us using Hayward and Scott of basildone which are very good but to be honest there is not much between them all. Tux

The additional supports for the turbos are on Leon's (Alunox) systems. Very nice work and uses a higher grade stainless (321, stabilised with titanium for higher temperature applications). Noble Motorsport in Chesterfield include a post-fit remap in their price. Both attract a significant premium over Tux's guide price above. The Rousch system is available direct from Piper and can be bought on-line, but I am told it is loud. The Hayward and Scott systems are used by quite a few on here, as are Dave Pike's (BCS, formally Urban). I recently fitted the latter, and am very impressed. You will also need to allow near enough £1k if you want to replace the manifolds. When search is working again you will find plenty of information and photos on here.

If you go the H&S route then take it to them, don't buy it and get someone to fit it as my garage had a mare fitting it with two pipes going back for rework.

My 3R was the first to have Dave Pike's (BCS, formally Urban) exhaust system fitted, and to date (aprox just over 2years) its been faultless. Flexi joints and heat wraped in the price. As the price goes, this system takes some beating for value. Remember manifolds are expensive, once added to the overall cost.

As for the wheels, there is a buying group going for wheels, if you are interested, I'm trying to find someone to refirb mine (middle and spokes are carbon colour, with the outer polished edge kept the same) but the laquer is badly peeling on the polished edge, aim to have winter and summer set of wheels and tyres.

My roush (over 5 years old now) is faultless and just the same as when it was fitted. No rattles, no really serious colour change from when it was a week old on the car.

I finally had my wheels done after 6 years and just did them without replacing the bolts - full acid dip, check, fill/rebuild etc. Much to my surprise I don't really miss the bolt heads, although if I was going to replaceme them I'd probably get the dremel out and cut off some stainless steel hex bolt heads as it would a) be cheaper than getting more plastic ones, and b) you could stick them back in if you had it acid dipped a second time.

after 5000miles including track use with a lot of 8000rpm flame outs we stripped my can last week (i had a silencer made for the wastegates) and the silencer was as new inside with absolutelly no loss to wadding which considering the package was very good indeed IMHO.

personally I wouldn't get one that wasn't repackage and doesn't have flexis

Great stuff, thanks for all your input. Am certain now that I will take the plunge, I've spoken with Mike at Noble Motorsport, very helpful guy and he proposed a very comprehensive approach rather than just bolting one on and hoping for the best. I'll speak with the other guys mentioned and go from there.

I've been speaking to Lepsons in Swindon about the wheel refurb, they seem very confident that they can deal with everything including the rim and replacement bolts. I'm taking a wheel over next week so we'll see if they run a mile after seeing one in the flesh rather than a photo! £135 a corner is the current quote, seems a bit steep but i did use them a while back to refurb some TVR Imolas and they came back perfect and better than original.....we'll see how it pans out.

Cheers,

Simon

So, the deed is done. My car's booked in at BCS with Dave Pike from the 23rd Sept for a new exhaust, uprated fuel pump and wiring.

Went the BCS route as the quality looks great, Dave seems like a hell of nice guy who will treat the car with kid gloves, plus I'm not too wild about remapping the car. My objective isn't to tweak the nuts off the car I just want to address the known weak point with a quality item, so pipes, pump and wiring seems like a good route for me.

Can't wait to get it done!

Still working on the wheel refurb.....

Bruno - <98dB when new, so not that noisy at all. But over time(>3yrs, 30,000 miles)the exhaust does become noisier, requiring silenced tail-pipes to get on the quieter circuits (Donington/Goodwood)

The re-mapping of the car isn't just about getting more power as the mapping can keep that std ish. putting a free flowing exhaust on will release more power naturally and may well run a bit leaner so the reason for the mapping is to keep the car safe not just squeeze more power.

Lepsons are spot on for wheel refurbishment. I live in swindon and had a set of 18" clio v6 wheels returned back to standard whicj was a very hard paint to match as they were spot on. Ive also taken my 3r down to get the wheels quoted and they were more than confident of completeing the task. Id trust them with any wheels as its not some mickey mouse set up. Your be in good hands smile

Great stuff, Dave is a great guy. Drove mine without remap for sometime before Trevor had a go at a remap (actuators were weak so unable to make much difference) but it will help as mentioned. What you will notice is the sound, enjoy!!

Well gents I finally got the car back from BCS yesterday complete with new exhaust (or should I say stainless artwork!) fitted.

Beautiful beautiful job, exactly what I was after, I will post some pics soon, but I have to give a massive thumbs up and thanks to Dave Pike, what a genuinely friendly guy and what a top bloke / job.

He reused the original tailpipes as requested (cleaned and polished up) so the car retains the standard exterior look.

The noise is a bit more 'burbly' at idle and isn't much louder on the move than standard, but feck me does it go!!!!!! I haven't driven it for a while and it does usually suprise me when I do but bl**dy hell the top end intially scared the st out of me on first drive, then I recalibrated to a very wide smile!!!!

Very very happy camper!

So did they also remap it for you? You normally have to have the cam timing altered to take advantage of the extra flow of gases, the Stock exhaust is not restrictive with the factory map and with a dual flow exhaust performance is only really gained with higher redline, you actually find that you lose power at mid range, but the power delivery is more linear across the rev range.
Its just with you saying that you can feel a big difference in performance, in my experience it usually feels like the car has less pull after the exhaust mod because the torque does not come in so aggressively, which is what gave stock nobles that powerful surge and kick in that they are famous for.

I'm with Si - purely subjective, but mine feels like its pulling harder since Dave worked his magic.

Just changing the exhaust with no remap? I wonder if he has been tweaking your actuators at the same time smile
Speed is something we intepret from a feeling, in a Lambo gallardo they give an impression of speed with there fizzy engine and exhaust note, also my car feels faster if i havent driven it for a while, it could be the fact that the flexi joints dont resonate the exhaust note through the cabin so it feels like the engine is pulling more effortlessly, or it could well be faster in so much as that the old exhaust had worked loose from the turbos.

But generally i dont think just changing the exhaust as a stand alone mod makes any difference to power does it? can anybody confirm?
