When i first start the car, it can try to cut out but when the car warms up its seems to tickover ok, but if i stop the car and try to start it again the problem is back even though the car is still warm, i have to keep the revs up to stop it cutting out, but then other times i start it uo and it ticks over fine hot or cold.

I dont know whether this is coincidence or not, and i know i ma an isiot for trying it, but this seemed to start ghappening after i put some stop smoke in with the engine oil, somebody told me it helps with compression on worn engines, but could it be that? Definately nothing to do with aircon.
I checked the throttle body, it seems to be seating properly, but imagine if it wasnt it would be revving higher when i let off the throttle.

When i am driving the car it is running fine, it is pulling hard and smoothly, i checked all vaccuum pipes and they are fine, could this be a lambda sensor? i have bosch universal fitted atm. Could it be a small air leak from the mainfold? or another sensor playing up or something electrical seen as though the problem is intermittent?

Thanks

Chris

adjust the throttle a fraction to bring the revs up a tad

or - add a few degrees of ignition to the load site where the problem is happening

what is the afr when it tried to die ? you may need a small tweak to the map (is there any black smoke ?)

getting the warmup map sorted is very difficult if you do not have lots of time and some cold weather, it is best to err on the rich side so the car will always start - unless you have lots of time and an environmental test chamber to hand

the stuff that stops engines from smoking is a kind of gunk that gets trapped round the engine parts ! not a good idea in my opinion. If you have a compression problem look at it as an opportunity to rebuild it with bigger and better parts

Cheers Mike, no black smoke, it starts up fine, its justs the rev can some time drop so low it cuts out.

so i can just adjust the throttle body position to give it some more revs at tick over? most of the time it ticks over fine at 800-850rpm, i feel that seen as though the problem is intermittent there is a small problem somewhere that i need to find.
could this be oil pressure related? leaking manifold? lambda sensor?

there is a small screw on the throttle stop - just make sure the throttle postion sensor is not reading too much so the ecu knows it is idling still

it could be a lambda sensor - can you check it in the software also

how cold is it when this happens ? what sort of ooolant temperature ?

can you get hold of a wideband afr meter to check it out

ok mike i will just tweak the idle from the throttle body.
cheers smile

i had a problem with my car not wanting to tick over at all, the AA man that came out to help adjusted the screw on the throtle. But it only helped in the short term (to get me home).

To be honest, i dont think there is a major problem as such, i have noticed it only tries to cut out when i stop at a junction within a few minutes after starting to drive the car, the revs drop low temporarily as i let off the gas, but they drop so low sometimes it tries to cut out, whereas the car could have been started and stood ticking over fine previous to setting off, strange, and it doesnt always happen, and it does not seem to be related to being hot or cold, if the car is hot and i leave it 5 minutes and start it again the problem will be back, only for the first few minutes of driving.

Sounds similar to a problem I had, which turned out to be lambda sensor. Does it include any tickover 'hunting' symptoms?

just went out and started the car with the clam up, a couple of things which i think are probably related, when i pull back the throttle body, a slight hissing noise, air noise, coming from somwhere, making me think maybe the air manifold may be leaking somewhere, but also could be something to do with the front turbo, when i start the car i get white smoke from the tail pipe leading to the front turbo, it has been like this for a while though, i was guessing it was a dodgy oil seal? seems to go away when the car is warmed up.
But i started it and it ticked over fine, but when i pulled back the throttle it sunded a bit ropey at low rpm and linked to the faint hissing air sound, think i need to strip off the front turbo and get it refurbed, take off the manilfold and reseal it, change the front lambda sensor and see if the problem goes away.

White smoke can be water - maybe there`s a water/coolant leak into the front turbo from it`s cooling system.

I have had the white smoke for about 6 months now but the coolant level never budges, i did have a slight coolant leak on the banjo after i first installed it but i sorted this by putting a new washer.

I will take another look whilst taking off the front turbo.

White smoke from cold start - often caused by condensation/water in a large/open exhaust which evaporates when the system has heated up.

Usually it will take a couple of minutes for the exhaust to get hot enough to vapourise the condensate so the white "smoke" doesn't appear straight away and will stop after another few minutes when it has all been evaporated.

Does this sound like it?

Whether it's condensation or not, it certainly sounds like water.

i had white smoke on another car - it turned out the exhaust valve oil seals had gone hard and were dripping oil onto the exhaust valves and burning off on start up

it is probably oil inside the turbochargers imo

I think you are right, it is an oil seal, because the white smoke only comes from one exhaust and smells like oil...smile... but could this be playing a part in the tickover problem.
I eliminated the air intake manifold today, definately not the problem, next i will check the lambda sensors, it is hunting at little at tickoever.

Again this problem only happens for a few minutes after start up, i can drive a fwe miles and the car will tickover fine, but if i turn the engine off leave it five minutes, turn it back on it struggles to tickover for the first few minutes again, i adjusted the throttle as a temp fix, now when i do the same, you can hear it struggling to keep the revs up stuttering and chugging between 700-850rpm but its not cutting out, after a few minutes the tickver smooths out and then it starts to tickover at 900rpm, which is too fast, so it has fixed it from cutting out temporarily, but i still need to find the root cause.

sounds like you need a tweak the the start up map

The fuel pressure regulator was faulty, only 2.5 bar at tickover.

It was the stock one, but we have just replaced it with a new one which is adjustable.

be careful some of the adjustable types can not give a consistent value and vary under boost

oh my goodness... sigh.. .. do i need to take it off and get a none adjustable one installed instead?.. or does it depend on the make and quality?
