i am getting close to ordering some parts for a big bore / stroked Noble
the cost of the cranks is a bit steep for a 1 off and i realise i need to get several made to keep the cost down
i am going to go back with some volumes to see what can be done with the price
is anyone else seriously interested ?
4.0 litres means you can run with almost no lag at all - or of you want serious power two massive turbos can be fitted again with minimal lag
600 hp on one of these engines will be a doddle - 800 and more is within reach with the right turbo's
i might be able to supply complete built engines if there is enough interest

box wont take it hence we are already keeping torque down... also wont rev as hard.
with the right turbos lag isn't an issue on a 3.0L engine imo.
If I was in search of more torque than the 3.0L will give, I would be changing the engine for an audi V8 and turning the engine.... cheaper and stronger IMHO.

Hoover has some gearboxes that will take more power and give a longer gearset
you don't have to go for massive torque, more revs/slower piston speeds are possible if it was destroked slightly. cams can also be selected for lower torque if you wanted to do that
the problem with the Noble is it sits in place where the turbo options are limited
if you think of the engine as 2 x 1.5 litre engines - it is difficult to find a compromise between bigger power without lag
however the options for 2 x 2.0 engines is much much larger
a pair of genuine Garrat GT28RS60 turbo's on a 3.0 are laggy - with 4.0 there will be almost no lag

been in a few cars with GT28's fitted and don't agree they are laggy, and they are massively better than T28's.... also hoovers gearset kit is $11k not including fitting or tax!!!you don't have to go for massive torque, more revs/slower piston speeds are possible if it was destroked slightly. cams can also be selected for lower torque if you wanted to do that

My car isnt laggy, its on par with the original T25's... just makes power higher up which actually suits a light noble IMO.

Not to mention the dog rings in place of synchronizers. Fine in a dedicated track car, but I'm not hard core enough to tolerate dog rings on the street. I'm still hoping somebody organizes an optimized 6-speed gear set with proper synchros.AFAIK, Hoover had to order "only" 3 gear sets at ~$10k each to persuade Quaife (or whoever it was) to do the engineering. If we could get 10 guys to agree on the ratios and that brought the price down to $5k, I'd be tempted.

It looks like i have found a neat solution. It uses standard crank and rods but uses an overbored block fitted with special liners. Same stroke as a standard noble but 3.7 litres is available. 4.0 is available with a small increase in stroke.
The liners are very thick and used in motorsport. Should easily handle over 1000 hp i have been informed
i will get prices for the 3.7 and 4.0 conversions

Just had a tweak around on my calculator - power being torque times revs. If the generally accepted limit on modified standard gearbox, (nitrided and shot peened gears), is 450 lb.ft, (a standard M400 has 390 lb.ft and an R3 320 lb.ft) then the trick will be to get this level of torque at higher revs than standard. Again taking an M400 the torque peak as standard is at 5000 rpm compared to maximum power at 6000 rpm which also seems typical of modified cars. So IF the 450 lb.ft could be achieved at say 6000 rpm then the power output would be around 590 bhp.((450/390)x (6000/5000)x425= 588). I`m guessing if maximum torque is at 6000 rpm the engine needs to rev to say 7500 rpm. So it might well be possible to get a reliable 600 bhp but I think more than that is unlikely? The key would seem to be a larger capacity short stroke engine with larger valves and higher boost pressures.
I think if you were going to this much trouble you would just go V8 and mount it longitudinal and strap 2 turbos to it. It would probably cost more money in the end but i believe the tuning potential would be worth it!
