Alarm fun and games – how best to sort it?

So it looks like my battery has probably died due to the cold weather…
As I went to put the battery on charge this evening (Accumate plugged in to lighter socket but not plugged in at mains), as I plugged in the charger the alarm started to go for it big time. It seems that the battery voltage was so low, that the alarm system has triggered and flattened the battery. Once the charger was connected there was enough juice going back in to run the alarm.
No problems thinks I, I’ll get the keys and switch the alarm off.
So back in two minutes and the key fob isn’t switching off the alarm and neither is the alarm dongle thingy when touched on to the interior alarm connector. Spare set of keys also no result. As it’s getting dark and late, I unplugged the charger and let it all go quiet.
So here’s my dilemma – does anyone know the best way to recharge the battery to the point where the alarm has sufficient volts to work with the key fob or dongle and switch off, or will I need to just let the car charge up with the alarm going off until the alarm can be switched off (if so any ideas on how long)? Or worst case, will I need to disable the alarm, charge up the battery (or fit new) and then reconnect the alarm?
