Emergency - rear manifold needed asap!
Discussion
Hi all
The dreaded word "crack" has appeared when in the same sentence as my rear manifold.
I have heard many discussions about this but maybe not paid enough attention.
Is there a better solution than buying a new one for £460?!!
any help asap would be great as the car is in the garage waiting for other things to be done and this needs to join the list.
thanks
L

weld a plate over the top of it to strengthen itThe dreaded word "crack" has appeared when in the same sentence as my rear manifold.

Hard luck
I'd just buy a new one from Jetstream... Or I'm sure I've seen a few threads on here recently where one member also has (unused) front & rear for sale... I think it was GTO600 perhaps?
I'd never be happy knowing it was welded up. Neither would you when it cracks again and eventually lunches your rear turbo!

you can get a plate welded over it that strenghtns it and prevents cracking in the future
West tuning do the mod - I am sure any workshop can do the mod
Id not do this on a modified car as they still crack and can break apart (and have).West tuning do the mod - I am sure any workshop can do the mod
The most effective way to stop them cracking is to fit flexis in your exhaust and take all that weight off the manifolds
why won' the SS steel ones fail again?... i thought the original ones are stainless steel?....the connection flanges warp over time so i would also get them milled to create a good seal to head and to turbo....
i got mine rewelded and then with the strengthening plate, after 1 year i checked them and they are fine.
The problem is the seams... they have a bead of weld which does not grab much of the surrounding material... the seams needs weave welding, it looks messy but works.. then with a strengthening plate over the top covering all the seam they are protected, and even if they were to open up again the seams would still be sealed due to the strengthening plate..
Edit to say ...just read Andys post... totally agree.. there is a lot of weight supported off of them, so you need knee supports to the turbos or manifolds and the exhaust needs flexi joints... not sure why but my car had knee supports for the turbos when i bought the car, i thought it was standard...

How do you know if your manifolds are cracked? How can you tell?
Is it obvious when you are driving the car?
In my case it was only when a proper inspection was done. I could only see it in situ with a torch. No symptoms evident prior to that. But I wouldn't want to wait and experience the most noitceable symptoms. Is it obvious when you are driving the car?
