Hello,
I'm in a position where I'm looking to buy an M400 after saving for what feels like forever.
Willing to travel.
Ideally looking for a silver one in good condition and not excess high mileage. Black, grey and dark blue are also colours I'd like.
I figure for my 35k budget I'm looking at 2004/2005 models.
If you are an M400 owner and would like to discuss please contact me. I'm not a time waster.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul,

Think you will be very lucky to get a decent one for that sort of money to be honest. Even if you do find one it will likely need the essential upgrades/mods doing too, thus costing you even more. You'd be better to continue saving and hopefully find a 'sorted' one with all the mods already done. I'm speaking from experience here as I was in the same position as you last year,- with a similar budget! I started looking for a decent 3R(@30k) or a 35k M400 and finished up (after much advice on here) spending a whole lot more ,- but I was lucky enough to find a very well sorted, late, low mileage M400.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. Well my 3R cost what I felt was a lot of money as I came from a £17k evo 8MR now worth £7,000. So a massive jump up for me. I'd love to be in a position where an M400 is all kitted out but really don't think my budget can stretch but i'd be more than happy with a standard one as I know it's not a massive difference but going from a 3R at near 370 horse power (tweaked) the 425 is enough for me.
Hopefully the longer I hold out the better. Cheers.

Hi Paul, hope your feeling better. If it's any good, your happy to try my 3R tuned to a bit over M400 power. I'm near Okehampton, drop me an email if your interested.

Hi Paul, I could be corrected here, but I'm sure the true bhp of the M400. was really around 380 and 390.
Mine was put on the dyno when I first purchased it, she only produced 360bhp, 2005 model with 20k, admittedly the cat in exhaust was Broken, but my point is if you have owned a 3R with 370bhp you will prob be disappointed with a standard 400, I was and have spent a small fortune to get her where she is today and wouldnt even consider 60k to sell.
So a well sorted 3R 6sp 420bhp, 35k for me would be money better spent. IMO

Interesting. I've read so many times the M400 was producing more horse power than that so I'll take it into consideration. The thing is that's what I'm aiming for but I was more than happy with the 3R.
Yeah, thanks Paul.

It depends on what you mean by totally standard, toward the end the factory started putting in high boost maps, as It became common knowledge that a 425bhp M400 was really 370 bhp, the downside for the owners was that the valve springs gave up even quicker.

What exactly is the full list of differences between a 3R and an M400?
I am aware of a few but i am sure there are a lot more little changes..

M400 has...
1.Uprated gear linkage?
2.Side pod scoops
3.Side pod oil cooler
4.T28 Turbos
5.Forged Pistons
6.Uprated fuel pump?
7.Uprated Injectors?
8.Suspension upgrade, dampers and springs
9.increased turning circle with modified splash guards
10.oil pressure gauge
11.anti roll bars
12.slim racing seats
13.driving position altered and slim tunnel.

You may be able to find a 3R with the same specification or higher... but some of the M400 mods you really only can get on a M400....imo a modded 3r with additional racing intercooler, exhaust, upgraded gearbox to the above would be just as good buy...but if you are wanting it to say m400 on the logbook then you have no choice but to wait it out...most M400 will have been remapped with upgrades so i dont think the issue of them producing 390bhp when leaving the factory will be much of a stumbling block.....

+ the ARBs (well, a rod really) although a handful of lucky few last off the production line 3R onwers got these, plus the gearchange upgrade too.

The thinner section centre tunnel made for a more comfortable driving position, definately straighter than the earlier cars.

As posted on here mine did 409bhp at Track&Road after a year, and 436bhp after Trevor fitted his exhaust.

Assuming they are cared for well and run in correctly, they should be pretty spot on bhp wise.

Im not a great teki but my race engineer shop was showing me what a mess the factory intercooler and pipework is.

Unequal pipe runs, too many turns and 90 deg bends.

He is building me a very bespoke intercooler and some very trick pipework to go with the Roush exhaust system. We will also have an ali rear diffuser with some good aero design on it too take heat away from the engine bay and clean up the rear drag!

What he says makes a lot of sense and as I understand it every degree of charge temp increase is 1HP lost, its easy to loose 30-40 horses once things have got warm!

I found one in Belgium but the guy wanted 48K and would not budge. Car did look great but i went the route of 3r and will do all the upgrades to make it an M400 comparable with maximum drivability

I got myself a 12k 2004 car and think the Roush exhaust, map, diffuser, bespoke hard pipe rework and one off intercooler will make it quite special
