Hi guys, just thought I'd share some pics of my sorry looking noble as I know I enjoy seeing what other owners are getting up to.
And then all replaced, cleaned and painted.
I took my car to jetstream before christmas for a new gearbox, LSD and a few other bits and the boys pointed out to me that the diagonal brace that runs close to the exhaust was rotten, and when I removed the rear diffuser I was shocked at just how bad it was! So the A frame under the exhaust and the rear bar that the towing eye bolts to has been completely replaced with new, thicker steel. The rest of the frame is fine with no rust at all, but it's all been cleaned up, rust treated and painted just to make sure this doesnt happen again. Looking at how bad it was I think if I ever needed to be pulled by the towing eye it would've just ripped the lot off the car.
I never drive my car in the rain, it's been garaged for the last three and a half years and the rest of the car is solid so I guess it's just purely heat from the exhaust that causes this?

Took mine to Leons for a new exhaust, knowing that there was a bit of corrosion to the frame. Most of the rear end needed replacing by the time he'd finished. I heard some 'rumours' that the frames were stored vertically and outside in South Africa. Water filled the lower end of the frame, causing corrosion to set in and continue once over here. I certainly think the corrosion is / was too extensive to be heat from the exhaust.

Well that would explain things if it's true, the diagonal bit on the nearside of the car had rusted through both the top and the bottom. The rust was so bad that I couldn't get any of the screw out because they had rusted to the frame, as you can see in the photo they all broke off.Jamescmr2 said:

Yeah I remember seeing yours stripped down at area 52 and i was back there when it was being replaced but I never knew mine was the same. Think yours was worse though? Its interesting that yours is also a 2003 GTO3 so maybe they were stood outside in the rain together lol. andygtt said:
mine wasnt quite as bad but i cut it all out and replaced.... its due to the splitter holding any water in that area... a few small holes drilled between the bars in the splitter will stop it in future.
I put an alloy pannel on the top and sides to prevent water getting in there.

looking at your photos it looks very similar. i'll dig out an old photo and compare rust hahaJ

I'm not sure I buy Andy's theory that it is water collected by the diffuser as I would have thought you would see it causng a pattern i.e. toward the front as the diffuser slopes. The way the corrosion pops out along the lengths and out of the top of sections lends wait to the theory it's coming from the inside out I would have thought???
