Gents,

Pressing on in Wales and have suddenly lost boost to both turbos. Can't hold any pressure at all. No noticeable noises. Opened the rear clam and looks to be a coolant leak from the T piece that connects the high pressure braided hose from the engine to raidiator at the front. Not a substantial leak but a reasonable splattering.

Any advice? Do you reckon the boost issue is related to coolant leak?

Many thanks

Check to see if a boost pipe has come loose. Do you get any boost at all? what does the boost gauge read?

The gauge reads negative pressure as per usual and makes it up to just below 0 bar and stops. Can't see that a boost pipe is loose and can't hear an obvious hissing. Which pipe would you expect it to be?

Cheers

Check the pipe from the rear turbo to the intercooler as this gets hot and brittle.

I know its only going to 0 bar but it could still be a vacuum to boost sensor problem if they are the stock actuators which may only hold 0.1 bar.. if they are M400 actuators then its not a vacuum pipe problem as it would show circa 0.4 bar...
Another thing to check is the vacuum pipe that connects under the throttle body, there is a 90 deg connector if it gets pushed on too far then it can cause mess with the boost sensor and cause low boost, pull it back a tad to make sure its not pushed on too far..
If its not the vacuum pipes and the car is not running lumpy then it check to see if one of the compressor pipes has come off the turbo or split....

look at the actuator rod on the front and rear turbo (rear is easiest to see) - has the rod come loose from the wastegate ?

I had/have the same issue. Car has been in the garage for three weeks now and is currently getting two new turbos. Both actuators were stuck in the open position. No pipes split but found the rear oil feed pipe was badly heat damaged. Manifolds cracked as well.

Bad news, both turbos have gone. Bearing broken in rear, front is seized.

Any ideas on the cost of 2 new M400 turbos (T28s I believe)? Should I be considering other turbos that are a logical upgrade?

Advice really appreciated.

Universal Turbos, or worth talking to Jetstream - they've got a shelf full of turbos from the development program, some of which are bound to be suitable. If you need to provide cores to Universal I've got a good pair of T25s that would be ripe for hybridisation (I know that isn't a real word). Upgrade wise the GT28RS seems the current preferred route, again through Universal. Hollowpockets has just fitted some and may be able to advise costs etc - they aren't a simple bolt on replacement.

hopefully your turbos are not ruined and can be reconditioned... around 1-1.2 k to get them to a higher spec and capable of running 100bhp more.

personally I would spend 2k instead and fit same turbos Adrian has on his M400 which are the GT25RS's... need a map and a little extra work but make car spool up earlier and capable of more power if you so desired later.

guess it depends on depth of your pockets lol

Surely if bothe turbos are nackered there has got to be a oil feed problem. Strange for both to die at same time.

If your engine is standard then go with T28's or as Andy suggest, personally l think GT2860RS are wasted unless your aiming for really big power which means lots of work & money !

I'm with James on this one , pretty odd to get 2 turbos fail at exactly the same time !!! Definately get oil pressure checked and checkbook lines .

As many have suggested plenty of options available , probably best to work out what you want power wise then make a choice . Tux

you shouldn't need new turbo's - just new actuators

had the car been stored for some time ?

Expect that it was an oil feed problem. As you say it's unusual that they went simultaneously. The manifolds are stainless Alunox and have been perfect so don't expect they are the cause. Will carefully check oil pressures etc.

It's used daily and the oil level is checked regularly (on the morning of the drive). May have been heavy use over the day, cornering speed all leading to temporary starvation. Luckily no obvious damage to the engine.

Will talk to Universal Turbos tomorrow about a re-core etc.

All-in-all a kick in the unmentionables.

You're running GT28's, right ?

Any other modifications on the engine/car ?
