If its 0-40 then it will be fine. its the second number that dictates the operating viscosity. The first is just for when cold i.e. starting. lower the better as it means the oil will circulate and do its job better when you first turn the key. Once up to temp though 0-40, 5-40 and 10-40 all do the same job

I've been led to believe that the '0' part of 0W40 makes it far too thin for most engines as it provides little lubrication when cold. Noble recommend Shell but I can't think which grade - if they sell more than one - off the top of my head.

Nope, a 0 oil when cold is still way way less viscus than anything at operating temp so will never be too thin for the engine.

Just bought some from Euro Car Parts - about £15 cheaper than Shell garage for 5 litres.

i have had trouble with noisy engines with Mobil one (not a Noble)

It comes down to set standards. A 40 oil flows a certain amount at 100 degrees. All 40 oils will flow the same at 100 degrees or close to it. That way when a manufacturer recommends a 40 oil it knows any 40 will work.
On a side note even the noble wiki says some noble specialist use mobil 1
On a further side note, I've just bought 10 litres of shell helix ultra 5w40 for £55 delivered from opie oils ready for its service

I use Silkolene Pro S 5W-40W. Again from opie oils. Meant to be very good at coping with high temps etc.
