I came across this solenoid that is always open when receiving power..i am getting a circuit breaker installed in the cabin so that i can cut off the battery..so i thought it may work to have this thing installed straight after the tank, would also make it easy to remove the tank without emptying every last drop of fuel.
The only thing is ..will it drain the battery?..

It shouldn't be a problem, but you can work out the current draw by measuring the resistance across the solenoid coil via two of the 3 terminals (probably the top 2 in the picture) using ohms law - so current = volts/ohms

So if resistance is say 90, then current draw will be (roughly) 12/90*1000 = 133mA, which shouldn't be a problem.

Is it actually intended for fuel use?

Chris, if suitable for fuel use & wired properly it should be de-energised when the ignition is off so no current draw.

I do question though if it's suitable for the suction line between the tank & pump though as it will restrict the flow.

judging by the spade terminals the fuel pipe diameter looks very small?

If you can find one with the right diameter connections (and I haven't seen one above 8mm)why not a manual tap, much simpler?

Thanks for all the responses, i think this one is 10mm which is ok because my lifter pump and swirl pot only has 10mm unions.

i really wanted to add it as a safety feature so that the fuel gets cut off in emergency same as breaking the connection to the battery.

Chris, the connections may be 10mm but the internal of the solenoid will be a lot smaller, probably no more than 6mm at best. A solenoid is usually designed to be in a pressure line.
