First place to look is the turbo heatshield, just bend it a tad if it's rubbing.

Tried heat shield all ok, is there anything in the tunnel that can rattle, it sounds like one of those triangles you had at school in music, it's driving me nuts mad

Don't want to frighten you but that could be an exhaust manifold

There is a double ended I bolt that is a link in the hand brake linkage in the tunnel.
Above this on my car is a rubber pad that had come lose and allowed the I bolt to rattle against the inside of the tunnel
Difficult to access but might be worth a look.Could be worth seeing if there is any excess play that can be taken out of the linkage.

Is it linked to bumps in the road, or regular like when the engine is running?

Yes it rattles when you go over a bump in the road, even if it is a small one

There is not many things that can cause that type of rattle , it sounds to me like a alloy panel or heat shield , check wheel arch Inner alloy panels against bottom tray , also check the front heat shield under the manifold as they can vibrate as well , is the battery clamp tight ??

Is it just the sound or do you get any resonation or vibration coming into the cabin? Is it a tinny metal on metal rattle sound like you would get from thin metal? Or more of a solid sound from something heavy, I.e a spanner hitting a metal bar?

It's a tinny metal on metal sound, it's as if something is floating about and hitting the other part even with the smallest of bumps, it's either right behind me or in the rear end of the tunnel

Could it be the exhaust they r quite a tight fit, it could be touching something or something laying on the metal undertray rattling.

I doubt its the exhaust as it would create resonance..the sound you are refering to is probably coming from a loose rear tunnel louvre.
Try this first, jack up the car one side, slide under and tap on the louvre, see if it makes the sound
